Fire Emblem Engage Runs Sharper on Switch 2—Just Don't Expect A Transformation
Visuals are cleaner, load times are cut in half, and battles are smoother—but Switch 2's upgrades for Engage are more "nice-to-have" than revolutionary.

The flashiest Nintendo tactical RPG, Fire Emblem Engage has been ported to the new Nintendo Switch 2 without any upgrades, patches, or tweaks to make it run better. Still, the game works better on the more powerful hardware, even though there isn't a direct update. However, don't get too excited about a complete visual overhaul or 60 FPS tactical duels. This is more of an improvement than a new idea.
Fans of Fire Emblem Engage already know what it has to offer: anime spectacle, tactical grid combat, and an emblem system that lets you call up heroes from previous Fire Emblem games, which is a bit of fan service. The game is faster and flashier than Three Houses. There are fewer school sim parts, and more time is spent in stylish, turn-based battles.

Fire Emblem Engage was already a beautiful game when it came out on the original Switch. Although dynamic resolution scaling and outdated hardware caused some issues, the game always looked great. That's probably why performance testing wasn't done on it at first, unlike Three Houses and Three Hopes, which really needed the extra help. However, Engage on Switch 2 has shown that it is worth it by making some small but important improvements.
When put next to the first game, Fire Emblem Engage on Switch 2 seems very much the same at first glance. But if you look more closely, you'll see a small, clear spot. The picture appears to be a little clearer, especially when the camera zooms out or when the characters move. The clarity does come with a price, though: the game's flaws, like aliasing on characters and backgrounds, stand out more than they did before.
On the other hand, cutscenes don't change. The dynamic resolution scaling is still there, but it's not as strong as it was in Three Houses. Although it's not a significant improvement, Fire Emblem Engage on Switch 2 keeps its target resolution much more consistent. This means you're still getting the clearest and most stable visual experience possible.
There is one place where the Switch 2 really shines: during loading screens. It's not much faster to start up, but it's about 25% faster to load into battles. Getting around the game's hub is where you really win. On Switch 2, it takes about 10 seconds to move between places, like your room and the overworld. On Switch, it took 20 seconds.
It might not sound exciting that these wait times are getting shorter, but Engage is full of changes. Those saved seconds add up throughout a long campaign, making the whole thing feel a lot smoother. Frame rate-wise, Switch 2 stays at 30FPS while exploring, with small stutters that happen when the game world loads. On the original Switch, these stutters occur more frequently, and the whole experience feels a bit rougher, but it's still playable.
When they're in battle, the difference is clearer. During battle on Switch 2, the frame rate is rock solid. It used to stutter when switching between the map and battle scenes, but now it's smooth. Those little animations where you zoom in and out when you attack an enemy? There will be no more freeze frames. Now they're quick, clean, and feel like they should have all along.

You will be let down if you think that the Switch 2 will magically make Fire Emblem Engage a next-gen powerhouse. But that wasn't what was promised. There are small but welcome improvements: faster loads, fewer stutters, and clearer images.
Would you play the game again just to get these new features? Most likely not. However, if you plan to come back or are starting the series for the first time, this is the best and most consistent version of one of the most exciting games so far.
This Switch 2 version won't change your mind about whether you liked Three Houses' political drama or Engage's nostalgic bombast—but it does make the best parts even better. And in campaigns that are heavy on tactics, every second saved and frame smoothed is important.
