Fire Emblem Comeback Sequel Launching Exclusively on Switch 2

Fire Emblem will finally be back, with a new game or the long-rumored remake of Fire Emblem 4.

Fans of Fire Emblem should sound the war horns now. This massively popular tactical RPG is making a big comeback, and this time it's going to fight on the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo hasn't made any official announcements yet, but everything points to an exciting new chapter for the series. This could include the long-awaited remake of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, which is also called Fire Emblem 4.

A recent LinkedIn post has just let the tactical cat out of the bag. A 3D character modeler with a lot of experience updated their work history and said they worked for Nintendo on a contract from January to April 2025. What is the role? Making character models for a follow-up to a Nintendo SRPG for the Nintendo Switch 2. If you add that to Nintendo's known SRPG lineup and the franchise's past timelines, it all points to Fire Emblem.

Some people might be surprised by the short four-month work period, but it's not unusual for developers to hire outside help to finish up a project. During crunch times, game companies often add more people to their development teams. This makes sure that the character designs and animations are perfect before the game is released.

What does this mean? The next mainline Fire Emblem game might already be in its last few months.

The timing makes sense. Three Houses was the last big Fire Emblem game to come out. It came out in 2019. Fire Emblem Engage came out in 2023. Engage was more of a celebration of an anniversary. Still, Nintendo and its co-developers Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo have likely been quietly working on the next full-fledged title for years.

If that's true, work on the game may have started right after Three Houses and its DLC came out, in 2019. That would give the project a healthy six-year development cycle, which is precisely what AAA games do these days, especially on new-generation hardware.

The mystery modeler’s LinkedIn profile said they worked in Tokyo, Japan, which is interesting because it links them even more to Intelligent Systems, the studio that made Fire Emblem. Intelligent Systems is a key part of Nintendo's development ecosystem, even though it's not the biggest team. They also work on games like Paper Mario and WarioWare.

The speculation doesn't end there. Some fans think that the title in question could be a remake of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, which came out in 1996 for the Super Famicom but was never officially released in the West. The game had new features, like the generation system, that later games like Awakening used as inspiration. A complete remake that has been updated and changed to work with the Nintendo Switch 2 could be the best thing for fans.

Nintendo hasn't confirmed anything yet, of course. But people who know what's going on think an official announcement might come as soon as this year. The Fire Emblem series will likely be back in the news soon, since a Nintendo Direct is coming up in July.

Nintendo released both Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (a remake) and teased a new mainline game in 2017. Is it possible for history to repeat itself? We might see a two-part Fire Emblem strategy again. For Switch 2, there might be a remake and a brand-new game.

What about exclusivity on platforms? At this point, the next Fire Emblem game will only come out on Switch 2. There were rumors at first that the game would work with the original Switch, but this new update strongly suggests that it will only be available on the next-gen console. This is probably because the game is being made to take advantage of the more powerful hardware of Nintendo's next console.

Fans of the series will be very excited to hear about news, trailers, and gameplay videos. The hype is real, whether it's a massive remake of a Super Famicom classic or a brand-new story with new characters and mechanics.

Nintendo has a history of holding off on releasing completed games until the right time, so even if development is done or almost done, they might still be holding off on the big reveal to make the biggest splash possible. This new game hasn't been in the works for a long time, since games like Fire Emblem Engage are probably finished long before they come out in early 2023.

Fire Emblem is still one of Nintendo's most popular tactical RPG series. Each new game adds new layers of strategy, deeper character interactions, and shocking plot twists. No matter if you started with the GBA or Three Houses, everyone is very excited to see what happens next.

Now, everyone is looking forward to the July Nintendo Direct or whatever big event Nintendo has planned next. Could that be the day the new Fire Emblem torchbearer enters the arena? No matter what, one thing is sure: Fire Emblem is not done making legends. The only question is, will you be ready to answer the call when war breaks out again?
