Going online on consoles has been fickle since Microsoft popularized premium memberships. With Sony and Nintendo following despite offering free online services for years. However, in the modern age, Sony and Nintendo have offered free online for free-to-play games and only Microsoft was holding out. Well, that has changed today with all online multiplayer for free-to-play games now available for free on Xbox One and Xbox Series.
It's better late than never but this was a business decision. Most free-to-play games make their money back through purchases, with the store it being hosted on taking a cut. With Microsoft now offering free online access to these games they're opening these digital stores to a wider audience.
