PS5 System Update Boosted PS5 Pro Enhanced Games Performance

Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank show smoother gameplay after the July 2025 firmware update, but Sony remains silent on the specifics.

Sony's most recent system software update for the PlayStation 5 may have done more than just stabilize the console. It was quietly released in July 2025. But the official patch notes are still not very clear. There are, however, reports that the firmware may be slightly improving the performance of PS5 Pro-enhanced games, especially in Fidelity Pro modes.

A report says that after the update, owners of the PS5 Pro are finding that some first-party games run more smoothly. The most significant changes can be seen in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, both developed by Insomniac Games. Many people on the internet claim that playing in Fidelity Pro mode improves frame rates, even when features like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) are not enabled.

One user said, "I noticed games run more smoothly on Fidelity Pro when 120Hz is turned on, even when VRR is off." "I'm not sure if it's just me." Another person added their thoughts, saying that they had seen the same thing and that the Fidelity mode worked much better.

Tests of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart supported these anecdotal claims even more. Players consistently saw frame rates higher than what was usual in modes that focused on fidelity. The update does seem to help some games, though. For instance, Bend Studio's Days Gone is reportedly unaffected by performance changes in its balanced mode.

There is a difference between the two, which suggests that the improvements may not be due to the system update itself. It's possible that Insomniac made changes to their games that improved their performance before the firmware update, but players are only now noticing the benefits. Since Sony didn't provide any solid information in the update notes, rumors continue to circulate.

To make things even more interesting, Cyberpunk 2077 now runs better on PS5 Pro. The game has been observed running at speeds higher than 60 fps, and in some cases, it is reported to be around 80 fps. However, it is not officially listed as a PS5 Pro Enhanced title. However, this doesn't seem to be related to the system update. Instead, it may be related to CD Projekt RED's recent major patch, which improved performance.

The fact that Sony hasn't said anything is annoying, but not entirely unexpected. The company often makes changes behind the scenes without notifying the public, so the community must find and confirm the changes after the update.

At this point, it appears that some games are running more smoothly, but it remains unclear whether the system firmware is to blame for the issue. For now, owners of the PS5 Pro are being asked to play some of their enhanced games again and see if they can tell the difference.
