Blizzard has announced that after nearly a decade, StarCraft 2 will not receive any major patches to talents, co-op content, or the game’s editor. Back in July was the game’s anniversary patch, which will now be the final core update. StarCraft 2 won’t simply left to rot and allow play counts to dwindle. Blizzard will still patch the game for smaller bug fixes and balance issues. There will be an overall emphasis on appeasing hardcore and e-sports level players.

Blizzard has hinted that the freed up staff will go on to work on other StarCraft related projects. Though, it isn’t clear if that will mean StarCraft 3 or some other side content. The original game was broken into three separate campaign expansions released over the course of five years, followed by smaller DLC packs. As StarCraft 2 was developed for a very different type of digital consumer, so it may be interesting to see if StarCraft 3 is released in the same manner or adjusted to today’s games as a service methodology.
