The Super Mario Bros. Movie has released its first proper trailer in which it shows off its voice acting, animation, and general tone. The movie will release on 7 April 2023 and will be produced by Illumination, the company best known for everything attached to the Minions, and Nintendo will also have a role in its production, but Nintendo would likely never let its baby be adapted without them again, otherwise there may have been another live-action Mario movie in cinemas.
The new trailer is available on Illumination’s YouTube channel, and it reveals the voice that Chris Pratt has decided to use for Mario, and it also obviously has everyone else’s voice acting on display. Other than the much-contested Chris Pratt choice for Mario, the voice cast includes: Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
From this first trailer, the voice acting appears to be fine in general, but the movie will clearly have very typical video game adjacent humor, for instance, it shows Mario jumping on a platform to have it disappear under his feet because, hey, it’s a video game thing that can happen and it’s obviously very funny. Opinions on this being funny may vary from person to person.
Considering the company producing it, if you enjoy the humor in moves like Despicable Me, Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, or anything at all related to the Minions, then this should be an entertaining enough romp with some video game humor and even a Mario Kart section included. However, there is one moment right at the end of the trailer where Chris Pratt’s Mario does his own version of the “wahoo” sound that Charles Martinet, the Mario voice actor in the games, is known for, and it isn’t great to see the classic voice actor’s work snubbed in favor of Pratt’s version, but Chris Pratt is now definitely in there, so there’s not much to be done.
Best to wait and see how it all turns out.
