Speculation around Xbox is building, with the studio allegedly preparing for a series of major announcements over the next several days. Industry insiders and journalists are leaking new material online daily, and the focus has shifted to Microsoft's gaming strategy, namely its investment objectives and partnerships with external development teams.

Perhaps most significantly, the Xbox and IO Interactive publishing relationship on Project Fantasy, a long-awaited unique fantasy RPG in production for several years, is apparently coming to an end. Microsoft and IO Interactive didn’t mention Xbox in the statement, but the language suggests the corporation served as the external partner that funded the project.

Xbox Rumors Major Strategy Shift

Project Fantasy was announced in 2021 and rapidly caught attention, aided by IO Interactive’s burgeoning reputation following the success of the Hitman series and its work on the James Bond game, 007 First Light. The current setback hasn’t diminished many fans’ belief that the fantasy project has great promise, given the studio’s recent track record.

IO Interactive said the closure of the collaboration will create short-term issues, including layoffs.

But the studio also reiterated its continued, full commitment to the game, its environment, and its original intellectual property, stating that Project Fantasy will continue to be developed and ultimately released to users. "We still have a lot of faith in the project,” the studio said, despite losing outside funding. IO Interactive said the game is still vital to its future goals, but will be restructured, and jobs will be cut in the immediate term.

The issue also seems to align with broader claims that Xbox is reshaping how it allocates development funding. Microsoft has reportedly said it will continue to invest extensively in game development but will shift funding to other priorities, according to recent reports. The corporation is reportedly focusing its efforts on internal projects rather than pursuing major publishing deals.

Third-party publishing arrangements may be fewer and farther between under the new plan, but that doesn’t mean costly games from Xbox-owned studios won't get plenty of support. One project that is allegedly still safe is OD, the impending horror title from famed game creator Hideo Kojima. While some analysts have expressed concern that the game may be left exposed amid suspected restructuring at Xbox, current rumors suggest the project is still progressing.

Industry insiders say cutting backing for Kojima’s venture would have repercussions beyond just monetary savings.

Kojima also recently said that other publishers had passed on OD because they couldn't get on board with the game's creative concept, so Xbox's endorsement is even more impressive. If Microsoft were to pull the plug on this initiative now, it might create a ripple of negative reactions across the gaming industry, further tarnishing the company's reputation among developers and players alike.

Xbox Series S Black and White

In some circumstances, it might make financial sense to save on development costs, but ending a high-profile partnership with one of the most revered names in gaming could be far more costly in terms of public perception. The decision announced regarding IO Interactive has already sparked concerns among third-party developers considering future agreements with Xbox.

Publishing deals may be more vulnerable to cancellation amid Microsoft's ongoing corporate restructuring, potentially making developers more wary. There has also been speculation that Xbox could be pulling back on its investment in third-party Game Pass deals. If true, it would be yet another major change for the subscription service, which has always relied on a steady stream of both first-party and third-party releases to attract users.

The long-term sustainability of Game Pass has often been compared to Netflix and other streaming services, where a steady influx of fresh content is considered important. Blockbuster Xbox exclusives such as Halo, Gears of War, and Call of Duty remain big draws, but many fans also want to see third-party titles added to the mix to further grow the service's appeal.
