ARK Survival Ascended Guide | How to Tame a Palaeoctopus (Genesis Ascended Part 1)

The Palaeoctopus is one of the more difficult creatures to tame in ARK: Survival Ascended – Genesis: Part 1. You must allow it to grab you, survive inside its tentacles, and repeatedly feed it a narcotic at the correct moment. A poorly prepared attempt can quickly fail, especially if another sea creature attacks during the process.

Clear the Surrounding Area

Before approaching a Palaeoctopus, eliminate every hostile creature nearby. Creatures in the ocean can detect and attack you from a considerable distance. A Megalodon or another aggressive creature can stop the taming process, hurt the Palaeoctopus, or even kill you if you are trapped.

Spend some time protecting the whole area around the target instead of just the area right next to it.

Prepare the Required Equipment

Consume Lazarus Chowder before beginning. Its health regeneration effect helps counter the continuous damage taken while the Palaeoctopus holds you.

You should also equip a full set of Scuba Gear and carry at least one spare Scuba Tank. Aim for more than 500 Health, although approximately 700 Health provides a safer margin when taming a high-level creature.

Bring plenty of Bio Toxin or Narcotic. Bio Toxin is the better option because each successful feeding raises the creature’s Torpidity by approximately 800 points. Higher-level Palaeoctopus specimens require significantly more feedings.

Find a Camouflaged Palaeoctopus

A Palaeoctopus can only begin the taming interaction while it is camouflaged. Look carefully around underwater pillars, ledges, and elevated structures. Camouflaged specimens may appear almost invisible or hang upside down against the terrain.

Do not chase one that is clearly visible and swimming freely. It will usually escape before you can begin the taming process.

Let It Grab You

Move close enough for the camouflaged Palaeoctopus to become aggressive. It will extend its tentacles, pull you toward its body, and position you near its beak.

Switching to first-person view can make the feeding cue easier to identify. Wait until the creature slightly pulls you backward, shakes, and makes a distinct sound. Feed it Bio Toxin immediately after this cue.

Feeding too early will not increase its Torpidity. Waiting too long causes additional damage and may disrupt your rhythm.

Monitor Its Torpidity

Use the HLN-A Scan by pressing H on the keyboard to check the Palaeoctopus regularly. Spyglasses may not display the necessary information while you are trapped.

Continue feeding Bio Toxin after every correct cue until the Torpidity bar is filled. A low-level creature may require only around 4,000 Torpidity, while a high-level one can require well over 10,000.

Once unconscious, the Palaeoctopus releases you and falls onto the nearest underwater ledge or the ocean floor.

Feed the Unconscious Palaeoctopus

Place Black Pearls in its inventory for the preferred taming food. You can also use Extraordinary Kibble, Raw Mutton, or other meat when Black Pearls are unavailable.

If you need to escape before completing the tame, attack the tentacle holding you. The Palaeoctopus will release you, but it will immediately swim away and the taming attempt will end.
