ASRock B850M-X Wi-Fi is a new addition to the B850 lineup, aimed at budget-friendly builders. It's perfect for putting together an AM5 Ryzen 9000 Series PC or even using older processors. Despite its modest price, it delivers impressive value, especially for those looking for a Micro ATX build.

Full-size B850 motherboards often cost between $170 and $ 200, but this board offers almost the same functionality at a significantly lower cost. It has all the necessary components to set up a well-equipped gaming PC without exceeding your budget.

Features and Packaging

The package is clear, educational, and has all the required information. The board features Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth connectivity, full support for Polychrome Sync for RGB and ARGB lighting, and HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, which are compatible with Ryzen 9000 Series processors out of the box.

You can update the BIOS via ASRock's USB Flashback button if needed. Being a B850 chipset board, it supports PCI Express Gen5, although only for the NVMe slot and not the graphics card slot. Given that PCIe Gen5 graphics cards are expensive and rare, this limitation is not a significant drawback.

Most graphics cards will not see a performance difference on PCIe Gen4 anyway. Additional features listed on the packaging include a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C connection, BIOS Flashback, ASRock Auto Driver Installer, a 6+1+1 power phase VRM design, and two M.2 slots supporting PCIe Gen 5 x 4 and PCIe Gen 4 x 4.

Wi-Fi 6E operates on the 802.11ax standard, but there are no Windows 10 drivers available, so a Windows 11 system is required to utilize Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features.

Accessories and Included Components

A quick-start guide to assist with setup, a high-quality, cushioned I/O shield to reduce rattling, two SATA cables for older drives, and the motherboard are all included in the package. If more detailed instructions are needed, a thorough online user manual is available on ASRock's website or through a convenient QR code.

Board Layout and Connectivity

The top-left corner features an 8-pin EPS power connector, supporting modest overclocking potential. While the 6+1+1 VRM is sufficient for typical gaming and desktop tasks, hardcore overclocking enthusiasts may prefer higher-end boards.

The AM5 socket is compatible with all current AM5 processors, including Ryzen 7000, 8000 APUs, and 9000 Series CPUs. There are only two RAM slots, which is ideal since most AM5 processors struggle with four sticks, potentially reducing RAM speeds. It supports up to 8800 MT/s RAM, though 6000–6400 MT/s is more practical.

Multiple PWM fan headers are included, such as CPU fan, CPU optional, and AIO headers, all of which are controllable via BIOS or ASRock software. The board also features a diagnostic LED to indicate issues with the CPU, RAM, VGA, or boot process, alongside three addressable RGB headers and one traditional 12V RGB header.

Front panel connections include USB Type-C (10Gb/s), USB Type-A (5Gb/s), four offset SATA ports, front panel audio, clear CMOS pins, temperature sensor probe output, and additional USB2.0 connectors. Audio is powered by Realtek ALC897, supporting 7.1 surround via front panel connections.

PCIe and Storage Options

The top M.2 slot supports PCIe Gen5x4 with dual heat sinks for cooling double-sided drives, while the secondary slot supports PCIe Gen4x4. The top PCIe slot is Gen4x16 with an armored clasp, the middle is Gen4x1, and the bottom is Gen4x16 wired for x4, suitable for add-on or capture cards. A TPM header is also included.

Rear IO

The rear IO is compact but functional. Antenna connectors are placed at the top for unobstructed placement. DisplayPort and HDMI outputs support up to 4K 120Hz. USB Flashback is clearly labeled alongside USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen1, USB Type-C, and 2.5G Ethernet.

Audio jacks are available and configurable via software. While no additional M.2 slots are included, the combination of two M.2 slots and SATA ports is sufficient for most small form factor or entry-level builds.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the ASRock B850M-X Wi-Fi motherboard offers a balanced feature set at an affordable price. While the VRM is modest, it can handle processors like 7800X3D or 9800X3D without issue.

In an era of increasingly expensive and feature-heavy motherboards, this board provides an honest, simple, and effective solution for budget-conscious gamers or users seeking a reliable platform.

For anyone building an AM5 Micro ATX or ATX system without overspending, this motherboard represents a highly recommended option.
