Obsidian Entertainment is well known within the realm of RPGs, and Avowed, an action role-playing title under the banner of Xbox Game Studios, is their most recent ambitious project. This guide covers a decision that you have to make early on in the game.
You’re given an early choice in the game in deciding whether you Free Ilora or leave her trapped inside a cell; the decision does have its consequences affecting combat and quests later on in the game.
If you choose to leave Ilora in the cell, you’ll end up fighting her later on in the tutorial. There’s going to be a boss fight later in the tutorial where she pops up, and she becomes hostile because you’ve abandoned her. Once you defeat her in the tutorial, she permanently dies.
If you choose to free Ilora, it allows her to join the journey where she helps you out in combat and assists you in fighting the tutorial boss. While her help isn’t necessarily needed, having allies around certainly does make fights easier.
A good while into the game, about 5 or 10 hours (depending on how you progress.) She plays a role in a side quest that involves refugees in the first major own. This quest requires you to secure a bandit boat for an escape.
If Ilora is freed in the tutorial, she’ll show up as one of the bandits in the quest. With her help, the quest becomes a tad easier without you having to pay off or fight the bandits, making it much easier for you to go through this quest.
While this choice isn’t that important in terms of affecting how you progress later in the game, freeing her does relieve the burden of being morally good, as there aren’t any negatives to freeing her. If you want a more diplomatic or compassionate approach within a game, I can see why you would choose this, but at the end of the day, this decision isn’t really that important.
