Shadowheart is among the first companions you get to enlist in the service of your party in Baldur's Gate 3, and she's a pretty vital companion throughout. A clerical companion is so important since she will be able to help with healing and, in general, support you on your adventure.
Here is how you can find and free her from the Illithid pod near the start of the game.
Finding Shadowheart
The first time you explore the Nautiloid ship, you'll be entering a room that contains an Illithid pod with Shadowheart inside. You'll immediately notice she's trapped inside and can't get out. The structure of this pod will be part of the mechanical structure of the ship, and it can only be opened by accessing a certain console nearby.
Finding the Master Device
To open the pod and release Shadowheart, you'll need to find a key-like item somewhere nearby. Start by investigating the room. Be sure to look around well, as the device is on the floor with some other stuff. It doesn't really look like a key, per se, but it acts like one for the pod's console.
You will also notice some green, mine-like objects in the room. Key tip: don't throw or sell those items; they'll come in handy later on in the game, so just store them in your inventory.
Use the device to free Shadowheart
Approach the console that's next to the Illithid pod and hold the key device in your hands. The key device will activate the console upon interaction, and all you have to do is press your palm onto it. Shadowheart is already outside the pod by that point. It really is pretty simple and requires no major decision-making, so it is easy enough to do.
Alternative Interaction
Save Shadowheart If you don't immediately save Shadowheart and instead speak with her through the pod, she'll make sure to remember it later. She may be a bit miffed that she hasn't been let out just yet, but she'll also be thankful that you would take the time out of your day to speak with her. Freeing her directly will, of course, net you a small boost in your friendship, helping their overall relationship as the game progresses.
Rewards and Benefits
Early saving of Shadowheart comes with obvious benefits. A cleric, she will be very good at healing and be super effective in combat against the undead. If your party doesn't have any healer companions, she will significantly enhance your survivability in combat. Even if there is already a paladin in your party, Shadowheart's talents will make her quite adaptable and effective in complementing your team.
Saving her outright actually develops your relationship with her a lot more, building a very sound framework for further story and character development.
Final Tips
- Look for that precious device everywhere in the room.
- Collect all the green mine-like objects to get to the next level.
- Consider the potential of Shadowheart companionship - when deciding to rescue or not.
Follow these steps, and you will have Shadowheart rescued from that Illithid pod for a valid and lively addition to your party, adding much-needed healing amongst other combat talents and story importance to your team. Rescue her as soon as possible and get on with your Baldur's Gate 3 quest with her standing by your side.
