Ambitious and powerful, Lorroakan of Baldur's Gate 3 is a big obstacle for players who are opposed to his ambitions. He is a pivotal enemy in Nightsong and the Shadowfell, and beating him requires strategy, planning, and tactical execution. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to beat Lorroakan and his defenses.
Preparation: Preparing for the Fight
Preparation is necessary before facing Lorroakan. Outfit the characters with items that give them resistance to elemental damage, especially fire and lightning, considering he often uses them in the fight. Increase the amount of potions for enhanced healing and scrolls for counterspell or dispel magic. If possible, prepare your spells like Counterspell, Silence, and Magic Missile; these can disrupt his spell casting and allow for attacks through his Arcane Ward.
Your party's makeup plays an important part, too. You will want at least one spellcaster who can interfere with Lorroakan's magic, such as a Wizard, Sorcerer, or Bard. A melee tank or frontline fighter can keep his summoned minions busy while a high-damage ranged attacker, like a Rogue or Ranger, focuses on taking him down fast. Make sure your spellcasters have spells like Dispel Magic and Counterspell prepared for their wards and buffs.
Taking Initiative
Lorroakan resides on the topmost level of the Sorcerous Sundries Tower. Once combat starts, he summons powerful minions, including protected constructs and elementals. Before you start attacking, place your party intelligently: spread out to avoid grouped damage from his area-of-effect spells, and position your melee fighters near where his minions will likely appear.
Surprise in combat will be your greatest advantage. If you can get your party members to set up stealth at first, you just might be able to pop some of those defenses before he gets up and starts attacking. Think of ways to use sneak attacks on him or even lay traps in areas where he is most likely to move.
Breaking Lorroakan's Defenses
Lorroakan is a formidable spellcaster and uses an Arcane Ward to sustain a lot of punishment. The only good way to drain this ward is to break it with consistent, low-resource hits such as Magic Missile, which won't miss and cuts through several of his defenses. Counterspell and Dispel Magic can stop him from casting or strip protective enchantments from himself.
The real bonus against Lorroakan is if your party has access to Silence. The placing of Silence near him stops him from casting the better portion of his spells and seriously deflates his threat. Use it to impede the spellcasting of his minions. Otherwise, crowd-control spells, such as Hold Person or Stun, can remove him for a duration.
Handling Minions
Lorroakan will employ constructs and elemental friends to help him in the fight. In case of poor handling, such minions will soon overcome your party. Wide-area-effect spells like Fireball, Cloud of Daggers, or Spirit Guardians will deal damage to many minions at once. Or conversely, single-target abilities will be able to quickly take down the most threatening foes.
Your tank or frontline combatant should focus their attention on pulling aggro from these minions, keeping their attention off your weaker spellcasters and far-mounted ranged. Take down any minions who can heal or buff Lorroakan as quickly as possible since they only serve to make the fight longer and will be an impediment to attempting to outrun his entire spell repertoire.
Exploiting Lorroakan's Weakness
Like many wizards, Lorroakan is weak to physical harm and status afflictions that interrupt concentration. Abilities that apply incapacitation, like Stunned, Restrained, or Blinded, significantly hinder his ability to fight effectively. Without his Arcane Ward, he takes massive damage from rouges and Rangers, who have high critical hit chances.
Lorroakan's very low health pool, for a boss, compared to other enemies in the game, is best dealt with by focusing all your efforts on him. If you can bring him down in reasonably short order, his minions will become far less coordinated, and they may even flee or lose morale.
Surviving and Winning The Battle
As the battle rages on, Lorroakan may attempt to teleport away or cast such powerful spells as Meteor Swarm or Chain Lightning. Be prepared to counter those with protective spells or abilities. Healing must be efficient: keep your most valuable party members alive without overhealing.
When Lorroakan's health is low, throw everything you have left into killing him. Don't be afraid to use consumables like Potions of Speed or even powerful relics you might have kept in reserve, along with scrolled spells. Killing Lorroakan will end the fight and may result in some important storyline revelations about the Nightsong.
After the Battle
Once you've bested Lorroakan, be sure to loot his body and search the quarters he kept for some nice treasures and lore. Defeating him can have great story significance, especially in regard to Nightsong and Shadowheart's personal stories. Say the correct speech to your party members and NPCs who are engaged in finding new speech options and other ramifications that may come from combat.
With these tactics, you will succeed in defeating Lorroakan and proceed with your quest through the world of Baldur's Gate 3. The fight is grueling, but it really is a great way to test your tactics and party composition.
