This guide outlines common pitfalls to avoid in Death Stranding 2, providing essential strategies for efficient deliveries, upgrades, travel, and exploration.

Each part gives specific tips on how to handle cargo, make the most of facilities, and make the most of Sam's skills to ensure a smooth journey through the Australian Outback and beyond.

Prepare for Delivery

Whenever embarking on an expedition, always plan your route using the simulation screen. Mapping out each leg of a delivery helps anticipate terrain challenges, weather conditions, Timefall zones, and enemy camps. After plotting your markers, decide which equipment to bring.

Repair Spray is crucial for restoring damaged cargo in Timefall or after falls. At the same time, PCC Units allow the fabrication of generators to recharge your Active Skeleton or vehicles and the construction of bridges and shelters.

Although Ladders and Climbing Anchors remain available, they are less necessary than before; cliffs and mountains can often be bypassed without extensive climbing gear.

New holsters and pouches streamline loadouts: equip a Handgun Holster, Grenade Pouches, and the Utility Pouch to carry Blood Bags—always keep these full. Finally, hold the Triangle button to Auto-Arrange cargo, ensuring balanced weight distribution on Sam's back.

Don't Miss These Upgrades

Beyond main orders, complete Standard Orders and Sub Orders to earn facility "likes" and star levels. Sub Orders unlock unique missions and upgrades, while Standard Orders improve standing with facilities—especially valuable once roads and monorails connect bases.

Reaching new star levels grants upgrades such as Active Skeletons, weapon enhancements, backpack components, and additional AP Pass Enhancement currency.

Key early facilities include Lone Commander for weapons, the Dowser to unlock the three-tier Boost Skeleton, and the Mechanic for vehicle improvements. Consult each facility's databank entry to preview forthcoming rewards.

Use the DHV Magellan

The DHV Magellan functions as a portable private locker and room. It stores materials and cargo securely, allowing easy transport across the map. At any facility unlikely to see reuse, excess resources are transferred into the Magellan—its private locker capacity is effectively unlimited.

This strategy ensures you always carry ample Resin, Special Alloy, and other crafting materials for building roads, monorails, and repairing mines. Chart Magellan's course using the map to fast-travel both it and Sam to remote locations without losing stored cargo.

Fast Travel Options

There are three primary methods of rapid relocation:

Beach Jumping unlocks teleportation between major facilities, but leaves the carried cargo in the origin's private locker.

Charting a DHV Magellan course transports both Sam and carried materials, though cargo will incur Timefall damage and reduce achievable star rankings on delivery.

Monorail travel permits seamless movement of cargo, vehicles, and the Magellan without affecting cargo condition, depositing all goods into the destination's private locker.

Sam's New Skills

AP Pass Enhancements provide modular buffs for combat, stealth, traversal, and scanning. Slot enhancements relevant to the current mission—for example, aim-assist and MP Bullets for combat, or noise suppression and improved motion sensors for stealth.

Avoid the Sensor Mode Change enhancement if you prefer a 360° scanner radius. Additionally, participate in low-stakes combat at enemy camps or VR missions to level up Sam's stats—improving reload speed, recoil control, reticle stability, endurance, and stamina—ensuring readiness for unavoidable boss fights and story encounters.

Backpack Upgrades

Backpack components offer passive buffs. Attachments include extra battery life for Active Skeletons, solar generators, additional ammo pouches, and Grenade Pouches. The Auto-Res Device, obtained from the Motherhood Facility, provides instant revival in combat.

Early cargo capacity upgrades enable heavier loads. Accessories such as hoods and hats also grant bonuses—equip the Otter Hood from the Inventor to swim through flooded areas and the PCO Hat from the Data Analyst for increased stamina.

Build Roads & Monorails

Prioritize leveling road pavers and monorail builders at their respective facilities. Roads conserve Active Skeleton battery, while monorails transport vehicles and Sam without battery drain.

Late-game backtracking across the Australian map becomes trivial once these networks connect facilities. Always carry PCC Units to construct generators, Timefall shelters, and safe rooms before leaving the Chiral Network.

Explore Off-Network

Wander off established networks to discover new facilities by picking up lost cargo that bears unknown facility names. Delivering such cargo unlocks new nodes in the Chiral Network, often requiring a Sub Order for full access.

To reach the Inventor's island facility surrounded by tar, use your scanner to navigate the yellow-pit pathway, aided by a Tri-Cruiser for speed. Seek out circular Mine facilities connected by monorails; these respawning resource hubs yield abundant Chiral Crystals, Resin, and Special Alloy once restored.

Carry necessary materials to repair mines and expand the network, facilitating resource farming and infrastructure growth.
