Marvel’s Venom Coming Back into Focus As New Reports Point to 2027

New reports suggest Insomniac’s mysterious Venom project remains in development, with Eddie Brock and Carnage potentially shaping a darker standalone Marvel adventure.

For the last few years, Marvel’s Venom has been one of the strangest rumored projects connected to PlayStation. Sony and Insomniac Games have never officially announced the game, yet fans have learned an unusual amount about it through reports and leaked internal information.

The biggest claim is that Venom could be targeting a 2027 release, potentially around September. Sony and Insomniac have not confirmed anything about that release window, so it should still be treated as a rumor. However, if the reported timeline is accurate, Insomniac could be preparing to release another major Marvel game roughly a year after Marvel’s Wolverine and before Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.

The history behind Venom is unusual because the project became known through the massive ransomware attack and data breach that targeted Insomniac in 2023.

The attack exposed a huge amount of internal information, including development plans, schedules, budgets, and details about projects that Sony had never publicly acknowledged. Among those materials was information pointing toward a standalone Venom game.

Those original plans obviously did not unfold exactly as expected. Wolverine became one of Insomniac’s major priorities, while the studio's broader plans appeared to change over time. Because Sony never publicly acknowledged Venom, fans were left wondering whether the project had eventually been canceled or simply pushed further into the future.

That uncertainty became even greater earlier this year when actor Naji Jeter, who plays Miles Morales, discussed the project and suggested that Venom had effectively fallen apart following the death of Tony Todd. Todd famously provided the voice of Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, making his passing an especially significant loss for the series.

Since then, additional reports have continued to point toward the game remaining in development. One of the more recent claims suggests that Insomniac is currently working on several projects simultaneously, including Wolverine, Venom, Spider-Man 3, and potentially another Ratchet & Clank game.

Wolverine is obviously the immediate priority because the game is scheduled to launch on September 15. Sony has spent years positioning Wolverine as one of PlayStation's biggest upcoming releases, so it would make little sense for the company to heavily promote another Insomniac Marvel game immediately before it.

If Venom really is planned for 2027, Sony will eventually need to start talking about it. A late-2026 announcement would therefore make sense, particularly if the game is already far enough into development to support a reveal. That does not mean an announcement is guaranteed at a particular event, but the timing would allow Insomniac to finish its Wolverine campaign before shifting attention toward whatever comes next.

The more fascinating question is what Venom actually looks like now.

The version of the project described in older reports may not be identical to what Insomniac is developing today. Internal plans can change dramatically over the years of production, and the rumored shift in protagonist could completely redefine the game.

According to previous reporting, Insomniac may be moving away from Harry Osborn as Venom and instead making Eddie Brock the central character. If accurate, that would represent a major creative change. Harry's version of Venom was deeply connected to Peter Parker, Norman Osborn, and the events of Spider-Man 2, while Eddie Brock would allow Insomniac to establish a different relationship between the host and the symbiote.

Eddie also makes sense for a standalone Venom game because the character has traditionally been associated with the lethal protector side of the story. Rather than simply functioning as another villain in Peter Parker's story, Eddie and the symbiote could become their anti-hero partnership.

A standalone game could also allow Insomniac to separate Venom's gameplay from Spider-Man in meaningful ways. Spider-Man is built around speed, agility, acrobatics, gadgets, and precise movement through the city. Venom should feel much heavier and more destructive, with his symbiote abilities becoming the foundation of movement, combat, and exploration.

Interestingly, Insomniac has already demonstrated that it understands how Venom can play. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 included a short sequence where players controlled Venom and experienced his abilities firsthand. The section allowed Venom to smash through environments, throw enemies around, use symbiote tendrils, and move through the world in an entirely different way from Peter and Miles.

That sequence was relatively brief, but it provided a glimpse of what a larger Venom game could potentially become. Insomniac already developed animations, combat mechanics, traversal concepts, and symbiote abilities for the character. If the studio is indeed making a standalone Venom project, some of that existing technology could provide a foundation rather than forcing the developers to start from scratch.

Marvel’s Venom Venom Holding Spiderman

A full game would obviously need to go much further.

Venom should not simply feel like Spider-Man with a different set of animations. His movement could emphasize enormous jumps, powerful tendril attacks, brutal landings, wall launches, and the ability to smash through parts of the environment.

That difference could even go to fighting. Spider-Man's combat style is usually based on fast reflexes, dodging, aerial attacks, gadgets, and utilizing the surroundings. Venom could be a lot more about momentum and physical power.

Carnage is where things become particularly interesting. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 already introduced Cletus Kasady through the Flame storyline and ended that arc by teasing the Carnage symbiote. That storyline has remained unresolved, creating an obvious connection to a potential future symbiote-focused game.

If Carnage is indeed being positioned as a major antagonist in Venom, the Flame storyline suddenly takes on even greater significance. Instead of simply setting up Spider-Man 3, the material could have laid the groundwork for another Insomniac Marvel project.

Carnage would also provide the perfect opponent for a playable Venom. If the protagonist is already one of Marvel's most physically powerful symbiotes, Insomniac needs enemies capable of matching that strength. Carnage gives the developers an opportunity to create massive symbiote battles while pushing the combat system far beyond what was possible in Spider-Man 2.

There have also been reports mentioning Anti-Venom, although the exact role of that symbiote remains unclear. Insomniac has already established Anti-Venom within its universe, meaning the studio has several different symbiote concepts available to build around. Exactly how those characters fit together in a potential Venom story is still unknown.

Marvel’s Venom Venom with his yellow tongue

Tonally, Venom could also occupy an interesting position within Insomniac's Marvel lineup.

Spider-Man represents the more traditional superhero fantasy, while Wolverine is expected to explore a significantly more violent and mature style of storytelling. Venom could be somewhere in the middle of those two approaches, offering players a darker Marvel experience while still maintaining the colorful open-world identity Insomniac has built.

That would be especially compelling with Eddie Brock, as he doesn't necessarily work under the same moral rules as Peter Parker does. A Venom game could explore the conflict of Eddie wanting to protect people vs. the more violent instincts of the symbiote.

The greatest obstacle is still the lack of official confirmation. Sony has not announced Marvel’s Venom, and the rumored details about its release date, protagonist, villains, or development status are unconfirmed.

Still, the timing is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Wolverine is almost here, Insomniac has several projects reportedly in development, and the studio has already demonstrated that it has a working foundation for Venom gameplay. If the reported 2027 release target is accurate, the mysterious project may not be nearly as far away as its lack of an announcement makes it seem.

For now, Wolverine remains the game Insomniac and Sony need to focus on. But once Logan finally arrives, attention will naturally turn toward the studio's next project. If Venom really is still alive, a reveal after Wolverine would give Insomniac the opportunity to introduce an entirely different kind of Marvel experience while continuing the larger universe it has been building.

That is what makes the current Venom rumors compelling. This is no longer simply a question of whether Insomniac once planned a Venom game. The latest reports suggest the project may have survived years of uncertainty and could be moving toward an actual release. If that proves accurate, Insomniac may have another major Marvel surprise waiting just around the corner.
