Deathless. Tales of Old Rus | Heretnik Boss Guide
The best way to beat the Heretnik, the scary vampire
Game Guide by Arne on Jan 05, 2025
In Deathless, most bosses have gimmicks that might just lose you the game, if overlooked. This applies for all the bosses. And through each play through, there is no way to avoid them. Each boss also comes with a retinue of followers. They make up the rest of the enemies you face and die as soon as the boss dies. Depending on what part of your run you face the boss on, you will either have one or three normal enemies to fight.
Heretnik Attacks & Abilities
The Heretnik is one of the harder boss fights, especially on higher difficulties and levels. A vampyric beast of a man that deals immense damage, has moderate amounts of health and good base armour. He can have three attacks, or rather, two attacks and a healing move.
His attacks are Charge Attack and Berserker Dash. Both of these attacks let him move forward two paces to attack. This means that if he is behind an enemy, he can still do his attacks. His Berserker Dash also gives you a wound card. Wound cards make you lose 1 hitpoint if they are in your hand at the end of a turn.
His main method of getting to you isn’t through dealing damage, but rather, it's by stacking the wound cards. You can accumulate a lot of them, and if you have a large deck, they may just build up and you’ll end up in a round where all you have are just wound cards.
Since they directly damage you, he can also be unusually good against low hitpoint heroes like Vasilisa and Alyosha. His ‘heal’ allows him to consume one of his dying allies and regain hit points, while giving him a stack of strength. This makes him very tanky if you don’t deal with dying enemies and he can potentially go up to full hp depending on how much hp the dying enemy had.
This also makes him really strong if he’s the last boss you’re facing. He has only one ability, which activates every time you reshuffle your deck. It drains on your hero, basically giving one less action point on that round. This ability can mostly be ignored, especially if you have a larger deck. And depending on when you meet him, you are bound to have at least 20 cards in your deck.
How to Beat the Heretnik
The Heretnik is a challenge precisely because of his ability to deal out lots of wound cards. So if you play your movement cards right and always have him disabled, they shouldn’ t prove to be too bad of an issue.
You should also use defensive cards as much as you can as he has no real way of dealing with that. But be warned, even if he doesn’t damage you, the wound cards go through from his Dash.
