Deathless. Tales of Old Rus | Werewolf Chieftain Boss Guide

How to beat the mecha-werewolf chieftain

Game Guide by Arne on  Jan 06, 2025

In Deathless, most bosses have gimmicks that might just lose you the game if overlooked. This applies to all the bosses. And through each playthrough, there is no way to avoid them. Each boss also comes with a retinue of followers. They make up the rest of the enemies you face and die as soon as the boss dies. Depending on what part of your run you face the boss on, you will either have one or three normal enemies to fight.

Werewolf Chieftain Attacks & Abilities

A big and bulky werewolf clad in armor and almost certainly one of the scarier bosses to face. The Werewolf Chieftain is a heavy hitter with high armor; however, overall, he is a weaker boss. He mostly relies on the retinue of monsters that come with him. His main attack is his Double Attack, which is his only melee attack, meaning he will use it all the time, which makes his damage exponentially higher than most other bosses.

If he’s not in melee, he also has a Witching Vial that deals damage and can dish out a random effect on you. These effects are:

  • Drops the Exhaustion Card at the top of your deck; the Exhaustion Card basically removes an AP when it is drawn.
  • Drops the Poison Card at the top of your deck; the Poison Card deals damage if you don’t use an AP to remove it.
  • Alternatively, it can also inflict 4 stacks of the burned effect on your hero.

His main and only ability is called Wolven Fury. This ability gives one stack of strength when a werewolf ally is vanquished. It also gives a stack of strength once there are no werewolf allies on the battlefield.

How to Beat the Werewolf Chieftain

The werewolf chieftain can be a tough nut to crack due to his werewolf retinue. If you just strut along headfirst and basically take out his allies first, you may just end up trying to fight a Werewolf Chieftain rocking strength of 5 or 6, which will inevitably chip through most of your health in a few turns, especially with his Double Attack.

You should try to get the werewolf chieftain to the front and focus on him, basically ignoring the rest of the werewolves. This is often easier said than done, however, since most of the werewolves deal a good amount of damage.

You should generally try to take out the berserkers. It is even more advantageous if you ‘kill’ one of the berserkers and get the chieftain to the front, basically making the berserkers hit him. Since they deal quite a fair amount of damage, It helps you chip down the chieftain.

You should also try to use a few of your higher-damage cards instead of shields or other boons.
