Destiny 2: Renegades Guide | How to Farm Vanguard Alerts for Tier 5 Loot
The quickest method to earn premium masterworked weapons and high-tier gear.
Game Guide by Ornstein on Dec 15, 2025
Vanguard Alerts is one of the most rewarding farms available right now in Destiny 2, especially if high-tier loot is the goal without chasing hard modifiers. This weekly playlist rotation can hand out extremely strong drops for effort that feels far lighter than most endgame grinds.
When the featured rewards line up, you can walk away with multiple Tier 5 weapons, including special masterworked versions that come with an extra Origin Trait, plus a steady stream of bonus loot just from completing activities.
Where to Find Vanguard Alerts in Destiny 2
Vanguard Alerts is not placed in the most obvious spot. You need to open The Portal, enter the Seasonal Hub, and then select the Vanguard Alerts tab near the top. Bungie has mentioned that placement may change later, but this is where it sits for now.
Once inside, several alert options appear, including Fireteam Vanguard Alert, Arena Vanguard Alert, a PvP option like Control, Grandmaster Vanguard Alert, and a raid slot tied to The Desert Perpetual.

The Two Best Playlists to Farm for Easy Tier 5 Loot
The main value usually comes from Fireteam Vanguard Alert and Arena Vanguard Alert. At first glance, the visible “bonus focus” can look underwhelming, since it may appear to be something simple like an armor reward.
The real payoff is tied to the challenge details that expand inside each playlist. When you complete three activities in a specific alert playlist, a special masterworked weapon reward can drop with increased gear tier, a large Power boost, and an additional Origin Trait.
These playlists are also surprisingly forgiving for how strong the rewards are. If your Power is solid, the activities can feel like easy “baby mode” while still producing Tier 5 results at a pace that is hard to match elsewhere.
How the Weekly Challenge Rewards Actually Work
Each alert playlist has its own challenge track. Completing three runs in Fireteam Vanguard Alert progresses only that track. Completing three runs in Arena Vanguard Alert progresses only the arena track.
This matters because it effectively means two separate guaranteed chances at the special masterworked featured weapon, one from each playlist, as long as the weekly challenges are available.
It is also important to know these challenges are account-based, not character-based. If the reward stages are finished on one character, they do not reset on another character. However, the challenge itself is not just a single step.
It is a multi-stage chain that continues after the first three completions. The first stage awards the featured weapon. Later stages keep paying out with extra loot and crafting materials, which makes the first several runs of the week noticeably more profitable.
The Featured Weapon and the Correct Name You Should Look For
If you are hunting the weekly featured rocket-assisted pulse rifle, the correct weapon name to watch for is Psi Aeterna IV. This is commonly misheard or mistyped, but the accurate spelling and formatting matters when you are checking drops, vault sorting, and roll trackers.
Psi Aeterna IV is especially desirable because rocket-assisted pulse rifles have been defining metas, even with balance adjustments to ammo reserves.
You will also hear frequent comparisons to Mint Retrograde, which is widely known as the first rocket-assisted pulse rifle that pushed this archetype into the spotlight.
Even after nerfs or tuning changes, the archetype remains extremely valuable, which is why seeing Psi Aeterna IV featured in Vanguard Alerts is such a big deal for farming.

Why the Masterworked Version Is Different
The special masterworked version is not a curated roll. It still drops with random perks, so the weapon chase stays meaningful.
The key difference is that the masterworked reward can include an additional Origin Trait that standard drops may not have. That extra trait is the same rare perk seen on certain premium seasonal weapon drops.
When it shows up, it can turn an already strong weapon into something that feels even more “god tier,” especially when the bonus Origin Trait is the one that matters most this season.
Accelerated Assault Explained
The standout Origin Trait to look for is Accelerated Assault. In simple terms, dealing sustained damage helps load slightly more ammo from reserves, or reduces heat on certain weapon types, and it also increases damage.
That combination is pure value, because it rewards steady firing without demanding complicated setup.
On some weapons, the impact is immediately noticeable because firing uptime becomes longer and smoother. On others, the benefit can be less obvious, and occasional bugs can happen depending on the weapon and current patch state.
Even then, the trait is still worth collecting because it is a straight upgrade when it works correctly and is likely to stay relevant as the sandbox shifts.
Why You Can End Up With More Than Two Masterworked Tier 5 Drops
Even though there are two obvious guaranteed challenges, the system can still shower you with extra premium drops. The featured masterworked weapons can drop from activity completions inside Vanguard Alerts even when you are not finishing a challenge step.
In other words, you can get your two “guaranteed” masterworked rewards, and then still see additional masterworked Tier 5 versions drop naturally during runs.
These drops can feel shockingly common. Reports include premium drops coming from reward chests, from completions, and even from random enemies during runs. The overall feeling is that Bungie opened the taps for this playlist, which is exactly why it is currently such a strong farm.

Vanguard Alerts vs Fireteam Ops and Other Portal Activities
It is still possible to see premium featured drops outside of Vanguard Alerts, including in other Portal activities like Fireteam Ops. A strike such as Birthplace of the Vile can still surprise you with a strong drop.
The difference is efficiency. Vanguard Alerts stacks multiple reward sources at once, including challenge payouts, frequent Tier 5 completions, and the chance at extra masterworked drops. That combination is hard to beat.
If your goal is raw loot volume and Tier 5 consistency, Vanguard Alerts generally gives more for less effort compared to bouncing between other portal nodes unless you are targeting a very specific drop elsewhere.
Why the Power Level Feels “Too Easy” for Tier 5 Rewards
One of the strangest parts of the system is how forgiving it can feel. You may see a very low recommended Power on the playlist, yet still receive Tier 5 gear at a steady rate if your account Power is high enough.
In many activities, being far above the requirement would normally reduce the excitement because rewards would not scale in the same way. Here, the scaling and reward behavior can still produce top-tier outcomes, which is a big part of why this farm is so popular.
You also tend to get multiple loot pieces per completion instead of a single reward. When that is combined with the early-week bonus stages from the challenge chain, the overall loot-per-minute becomes extremely hard to match.
Grandmaster Vanguard Alert and Horror’s Least
Grandmaster Vanguard Alert sits on the other end of the spectrum. It comes with a harsh delta and can feel closer to the “Grandmasters of old,” depending on the weekly strike. A strike like Exodus Crash can still be punishing if you enter unprepared.
The big attraction here is the special Tier 5 drop of Horror’s Least, which can also roll with Accelerated Assault as the bonus Origin Trait. The first completion reward is the main guarantee.
Additional farming may be possible, but the time investment can feel inefficient compared to the faster alert playlists that output loot at a much higher rate.
If survivability is a concern, defensive setups can make the experience far smoother. Tools like Stronghold can heavily stabilize certain Titan builds, while Warlock support styles that lean into “buddy” utility can also help keep runs controlled.
The key is that success here is more about consistency and survival than speed, especially when compared to the quicker alert playlists.

What to Focus on This Week for the Best Results
If Tier 5 loot is the priority, the strongest weekly approach is to run Fireteam Vanguard Alert and Arena Vanguard Alert until the first challenge stages are cleared, then continue as long as the bonus stages still feel worthwhile for crafting materials and extra drops.
Keep watch for masterworked versions of Psi Aeterna IV with Accelerated Assault, and stay alert for surprise premium drops that can appear even outside challenge completions.
If time is limited, start with the playlist that feels fastest for you, then switch to the other alert track so you do not leave a guaranteed reward behind.
After that, consider Grandmaster Vanguard Alert only if you specifically want Horror’s Least or you enjoy the higher-stakes difficulty loop.
