The Renegades expansion went live with the weekly reset and quickly became a major talking point in Destiny 2. Overall reception has been far more positive than The Edge of Fate.

Many Guardians feel that Renegades is a big improvement in tone, story, and rewards, even if you still see some complaints about bugs and progression issues.

The launch numbers tell a different story. Concurrency peaked a little over 70,000 on Steam, which is lower than the roughly 100,000 you saw with The Edge of Fate.

This makes Renegades the lowest-launching Destiny expansion so far. That drop is not surprising, though. The Edge of Fate turned a lot of people off, and many who bought the Year of Prophecy bundle did not rush back on day one.

Because of that, Renegades does not “save” Destiny 2, but it does feel like a step in the right direction after a harsh misstep. If you were burned before, this expansion is built to win you back slowly with better story beats, a flashy exotic sword, and a more interesting endgame loop.

Campaign Overview and Star Wars-Inspired Story

The Renegades campaign is compact but memorable. You get six main story missions, plus extra Lawless Frontier content that acts as side material once the primary story is complete. You can clear the main campaign relatively quickly, especially if you go in prepared and at a healthy Power level.

The Star Wars inspiration is obvious. You will notice familiar beats in the environments, set pieces, and certain combat moments. At the same time, the expansion avoids directly using iconic characters.

You will not be grabbing bounties from Princess Leia or standing next to Darth Vader in the Tower. Instead, you get a strong homage that fits the Destiny universe while still delivering that space-opera feeling.

One important warning: there are known softlock issues in some campaign steps. If you skip dialogue too quickly, you can sometimes end up unable to progress. To stay safe, let objectives update fully before sprinting ahead, and avoid hammering the skip button during key moments.

The Built-In Exotic Mission and Why It Matters

During the campaign, you are dropped into a full-blown exotic mission baked right into the story. This mission feels more complex than a standard campaign chapter, with layered mechanics, navigation puzzles, and less obvious objective markers.

You are expected to pay attention to the environment and experiment instead of sprinting straight to a waypoint.

If you struggle to figure out where to go or what to activate, slow down and look for visual clues, symbols, and enemy waves that hint at the next step.

This mission is not just a one-and-done story beat. It becomes one of the core repeatable activities once you finish the campaign, so learning its flow early will pay off later.

Praxic Blade: Your Lightsaber-Style Exotic Sword

The star reward from that exotic mission is the Praxic Blade, the lightsaber-style exotic sword added in Renegades. This weapon is designed to be flashy and fun, with fast swings and special mechanics that make you feel like a space knight charging into a firefight.

After you finish the campaign, you can go back into the exotic mission and dig deeper. There are three different exotic catalysts for Praxic Blade available right now.

Each one is tied to secret mechanics and hidden objectives inside the mission. You will need to watch for unusual symbols, hidden paths, and triggered events to unlock them.

Because of how many upgrades and cosmetics are tied to Praxic Blade, it is worth treating this sword as one of your main long-term projects in Renegades. The more time you invest into its catalysts and cosmetics, the more powerful and unique it becomes.

Lawless Frontier Endgame Flow and Exotic Key Cards

After you pick a syndicate, you are fully thrown into the Lawless Frontier, which acts as the main endgame activity loop for Renegades.

Here, you travel between different areas and focus on contracts that award syndicate reputation and various loot drops. This loop is meant to keep you bouncing between patrol-style tasks and more intense encounters.

While you are in the Lawless Frontier, you will start picking up exotic key cards. These sound incredibly mysterious at first, but their actual function is more grounded.

When you use an exotic key card, you receive a random piece of exotic armor. Early on, these drops tend to favor the new Renegades armor pieces, so the first few key cards are great for filling out your new set.

As you keep using them, the drops broaden into more random exotic armor. Alongside the armor, you also see special lockboxes that boost the quality of your rewards at the end of a run.

Do not hoard every key card forever. Use them steadily as you work through the Lawless Frontier so you can gear up and keep your build moving forward.

Dark Matter Crystals and Lightsaber Colors

A lot of hype around Renegades revolves around customizing Praxic Blade with Dark Matter Crystals. These function as the in-game version of lightsaber color crystals, letting you swap the visual color and vibe of your sword.

One key clarification: Dark Matter Crystals do not appear to be tied directly to exotic key cards. In practice, you can get them as random rewards at the end of Lawless Frontier activities.

For example, an orange Dark Matter Crystal for Praxic Blade can simply drop from the final chest after a run. This makes general play and consistent activity clearing more important than obsessing over key card usage.

Because the crystals are random drops, running the Lawless Frontier regularly and opening as many reward chests as possible is your best way to build out your color collection over time.

The New Orders System Replacing Traditional Bounties

With Renegades, Bungie has replaced the old bounty system with a new structure called Orders. Traditional bounties have been redesigned into this system, which now covers most of your repeatable objectives.

You earn different tiers of orders, including Legendary and Exotic Orders. As you complete them, you can earn powerful rewards and extra progression. Exotic Orders are particularly important because they tie into the more prestigious cosmetic unlocks for Praxic Blade.

In fact, unlocking the yellow Dark Matter Crystal for your Praxic Blade is directly connected to Exotic Orders. You need to access a special Exotic Order that rewards this yellow crystal when completed. This Exotic Order is more complex than usual, so be prepared for higher difficulty and more demanding objectives, but the reward justifies the effort if you want a full set of lightsaber colors.

Requirements and Power Level for the Equilibrium Dungeon

To enter Equilibrium, you must own the Renegades expansion. Dungeon passes and separate dungeon keys are gone; the dungeon is directly included with the DLC. This removes a lot of confusion about which extra purchase you need to access new endgame content.

There are also progression steps to handle before you jump in. Your fireteam leader needs to have advanced the dungeon introductory pursuit, The Way Between, to at least step two.

You pick up the Equilibrium introductory pursuit from Aunor in the Cantina of Tharsis Outpost after completing step five of the main Renegades pursuit. If you plan to run the dungeon right away or participate in the race, you should make sure this quest is ready in advance.

A fireteam of three is required to launch Equilibrium, and during Contest Mode, fireteam Power is disabled. The recommended Power level is 370.

If you go in below that, your damage output will be reduced and you will take more damage from enemies. Hitting or exceeding the recommended Power is important if you want a smoother Contest experience.

Not Swap Modifier and Loadout Strategy

For Equilibrium Contest Mode, Bungie has enabled the Not Swap modifier again. If you disliked this modifier in the epic raid, it has now returned for the dungeon race.

When Not Swap is active, changing exotic or legendary armor, or weapons that alter your ammo type, will reset your super and ability energy, as well as your special and heavy ammo reserves.

This is meant to discourage constant loadout swapping mid-encounter. However, orbs of Power and ammo bricks on the ground are no longer affected by Not Swap, so you can still rebuild your resources if you make a change.

Because of this, you should plan your loadout carefully before each encounter and avoid unnecessary swaps once the action starts. Treat each phase like a full commitment to a specific build instead of a place to experiment every few minutes.

Cosplay Cosmodrome and Community Highlights

Alongside gameplay content, Bungie is also spotlighting community creativity with the Cosplay Cosmodrome showcase.

You can see some impressive looks, including an especially striking Eris Morn cosplay, highlighted in official posts and blogs. If you enjoy the broader Destiny community, this event is a fun way to see how other fans interpret the new expansion themes and classic characters.

Twitch Drops, Discord Quest, and the Inkdrawn Shader

During the Equilibrium lead-up period, you can earn special rewards through outside-the-game activities. Watching eligible Destiny streams on Twitch for 30 minutes grants an exclusive emblem, and watching for a total of four hours unlocks a new exotic ship.

The watch time does not need to be in a single session, so you can split it across multiple days as long as you hit the total before the drops period ends on December 12 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific.

There is also a Discord quest tied to Renegades, running from December 2 to December 14. Completing this quest earns you the Inkdrawn shader code, letting you add a unique black-and-white style to your armor or weapons. Once you unlock the code, you redeem it on Bungie’s site and then claim it in-game.

Renegades Bungie Rewards and Exclusive Emblems

Bungie Rewards are active for Renegades, offering physical collectibles such as pins and other themed items you can unlock by completing in-game milestones.

On top of that, purchases made during the Renegades period grant a specific emblem, giving you one more cosmetic to show that you were active during this expansion’s launch window.

Checking the Bungie Rewards page regularly is worthwhile if you care about limited-time cosmetics and real-world items tied to your achievements.
