Mastering the Dark Master in the ultimate Tormented Echo form is a complete change of perspective when it comes to how you think about positioning yourself against a boss and timing the moments in which they attack. The Tormented Lord Zir challenge is a tough checkpoint level in Diablo 4 set to wipe out those who rely on passive defenses to win the game.

This fight is a hardcore mechanical duel in which position is the most important thing, and not a stat match. The most important gameplay element of this high-stakes duel is the Tormented vulnerability debuff mechanic. On each use of a major telegraphed blood ability by Lord Zir, a stacking -1 to damage mitigation will be applied to your character.
This tracking is a huge increase in any incoming damage dealt in the arena. If these stacks reach the level of 2 - 3, then even the simplest of environmental dangers will immediately drain your health bar, and Armor will be useless.
So you need to make sure that your plan for how you deal with the Dark Master is based on calculated and intentional evasion, combined with lots of burst damage. This battle will need to be fought with a lateral spin, always looking for him to move around, and staying mobile enough to avoid the clogged-up arena floor. It requires a lot of discipline and demands patience and correct movements more than anything else.
Create Your Character and Loadout.
You must systematically build out your defenses to counter the Ancient's elementals before going into the dangerous depths of the Ancient's Seat and starting this ritual. The stacking debuff system also doesn't really affect physical armor, so it's best to focus on elemental thresholds.
Lord Zir uses almost exclusively black, dark, vampiric art techniques that manifest as heavy Shadow and Fire damage. There is no room to play around with your Shadow and Fire resistances, and you need to get them at their highest levels if this is the content you wish to play. The damage from the ambient arena will be countered by using a specific anti-shade elixir and defensive incenses.
The best way to prevent him from applying his deadly debuff is to move around a lot. You should make sure that your boots and amulet will give you the highest roll to move at, so that you can be successful at kiting him with his tracking projectiles later in the fight.
Your skill tree and gear aspects also need to be reshaped to focus on a large amount of single target damage and extremely reliable burst crowd control. Any mechanics that can add a bunch of stagger to the boss are very powerful during this fight, as forcing him to stagger resets any continuous attack he is doing and opens up lots of safe time for you to do your ability rotations.
Navigating Melee Slashes and Frontal Cleaves
The first phase of the dueling is an instant assessment of "mechanical awareness" and positioning in close quarters. When Lord Zir comes out of the red altar, he will immediately attempt to go into melee range, using standard claw attacks which will deliver moderate physical damage.
These basic swings can be controlled, but you'll have to be extra vigilant about his heavily telegraphing Blood Talons ability. If the Dark Master settles into a firm, stiff position, with his dark crimson forearms glowing with power, he is getting ready to unleash a huge frontal scythe attack.

If you enter within this broad frontal arc, you will lose a significant amount of HP and will immediately obtain a Tormented debuff stack. The best way to avoid it is to aggressively use your evade and dash straight through him, setting up a safe attacking position right behind his back.
When he clears the ground with his front, his body follows and keeps pressing against the back of the target while his front cleaves harmlessly through the empty area. The key is to get used to circling continuously around the boss; never standing still in front of him for more than a few seconds.
Blood puddles and Blood rain management.
As you successfully start to deal health damage to him, the arena will quickly turn from a duel into a puzzle. Lord Zir will periodically raise his enormous wings and bend his back downwards, spilling Blood Rain in the immediate vicinity, in the form of flammable crimson drops.
These projectiles leave spreading pools of darkness blood on the ground, which will cause significant long-term damage and significantly slow movement speed when stepped on. One of the best ways to control this disorganized chaos is to set up the boss to move to the outside of the circle from the start of the battle.
When he positions himself on the edge of the map (the wall), the blood puddles will be neatly placed on the edge of the map. This intentional move leaves the entire center of the arena absolutely clear and open for emergency moves.
Also, special care must be exercised when using other physical attacks in close proximity to these active puddles; if Lord Zir attacks them with any of his other physical attacks, the blood puddles can burst outward and release blood missiles that will move slowly across the screen, dealing very powerful damage on hit.
Making it through the Blood Orb Intermissions and Bloodseekers
When he reaches major health percentages (80/50), the Dark Master will significantly increase the difficulty of the fight. From time to time, he'll call forth Blood Orbs floating in the air as individual turrets, which will sweep out waves of energy on the floor.
At the same time, Elite Bloodseekers will be summoned by the boss to help him find you. These tracking adds have a sinister set of abilities that can be very dangerous and can easily take up a lot of your playable area if left by the boss.
These elite minions appear out of nowhere, and the very instant they appear, your attention automatically shifts from Lord Zir to throwing them to the ground with a good hard push. If you don't clear these secondary threats up quick, you will find yourself in a situation that will inevitably end in death if the boss's frontal attacks, combined with the tracking elite's powerful CC, trap you.
In these tumultuous moments, the Dark Master will also use the airborne strafing run, and then fly away behind a line of bats that will extend the entire length of the room. You'll need to keep very cool, stepping completely out of the telegraphed limits before he plummets back down on you with a knock-back-inducing wind blast.
Final execution and securing the spoils
The last 20% of Lord Zir's health bar represents the zenith of the fight, where all the mechanics that were mentioned before come together to form a barrage of attacks. There will be lots of blood pools on the floor shifting and moving around, several floating orbs will screen around and around, and the boss will get into a frenzy, rapidly alternating his wing claps and blood slashes.
It's a closing phase that requires absolute mechanical perfection and very disciplined, small micro-movements. The urge to panic or greedily stand still must be completely overridden in order to inflict the final bit of damage. Rather, focus on a loop of movement that is tight and fast and dodges the tracking projectiles as you fire at his back during his brief recovery animations.
Use your remaining Unstoppable cooldowns just the right time to avoid getting caught with one of the ground hazards being activated, which can cause a slowdown in a safe area and lead to a deadly combo. As long as you keep your head cool and your mind on the task at hand, you'll slowly take away the rest of his life.
