In the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, vocation changes are one of the primary mechanics. They allow players to enhance their characters by introducing new skills and improved stats. However, the system must be applied wisely to ensure positive results over a long period of time.

How And When To Change Vocations

You can change the vocation of a party member once they reach level 20 in that role. This can be done multiple times, and characters can change back to their old vocations, though it is usually inefficient to do so.

For your first vocation change, it would be advisable to do this shortly after arriving at Alltrades Abbey. At the start of the game, the benefits of a new class may turn out to be more than the negatives of quitting a class before mastering it.

However, for the latter, changes in timing become important. Often, magic users learn some of the strongest spells available after hitting level twenty. Therefore, an extra few levels to wait is also beneficial. There is less risk when changing earlier for physical vocations. Gadabouts, in this sense, should switch to Sages as soon as possible in order to minimize losses associated with the switch.

Stat Considerations

Stat changes when changing vocation transitions. Stats revert to zero, and characters level down to 1. Their effectiveness is reduced in half. So when characters change their vocations after maxing out their pre-change stats, it pays off in the long run benefits of the new vocation.

Also, remember that the new class characters will be weak at first, although they do level up fast. Do not switch classes right before going into a hard dungeon, and you may want to spread out class switches across your group so you do not have a group of all low-level characters in a dangerous situation.
