One of the first side quests you'll encounter in God of War Ragnarök is The Weight of Chains. There are some cool rewards here for you to pick up and a huge whale for you to free.
How To Start The Quest
Head over to Radsvinn's Rig in the Bay of Bounty. You'll see it on the right side of the bay, near Sindri's shop. There should be a Watchtower blocked by golden rocks. To remove them, use the nearby explosive pots. Once the rocks are cleared, climb the tower to begin the Weight of Chains quest.
In every Draugr Hole, you’ll have to fight The Hateful. After defeating The Hateful, collect the loot from the Draugr Hole. There’s a raven and a red chest for you to find here. Once you've cleaned up, board your boat and head to Althjof's Rig, the northernmost mining rig.
Head towards Althjof's Rig
Head towards Althjof's Rig, and you will see a small dock with a blue flag. Park your boat and proceed ashore. Once again, a stone will block your path; simply throw your axe at the nearby explosive pot to clear it. Move forward, destroying the Wretch nest and blowing up a stone mound to the right of the gate. Go around the cliff edge, then climb up to deal with the second Wretch nest.
You will come across a gigantic wheel. Turn it toward Kratos and freeze it in place by throwing your axe at the gear above. Next, crawl along the edge and turn right. Get into the elevator, recall your axe, and let it take you up. Once there, smash through the cracked stone floor to face a Bergsra Mother with a red chest. After taking her down, take the key from the chest and leave the island. It might help to use your Blades of Chaos instead of the Axe in this fight.
Head Back To The Watchtower
With the key in hand, head back to The Watchtower. Use the key to open the door and enter a place with a large drum. Raise the drum so Atreus can shoot it, which will summon the massive Lyngbakr from the lake's depths. Your next stop is Lyngbakr Island. Jump down from The Watchtower, get into your boat, and row toward the massive whale.
First Chain
After docking with the whale, climb to its back. Draugr will be waiting for you, so take them out and proceed to the gate in the back. Break a nearby explosive pot so you can open the gate. Blowing up that pot and cutting down the pillar will cause Lyngbakr to raise its flipper. Break the chain that holds it down, and you'll be one step closer to releasing the whale.
Second Chain
Go back to where you fought the Draugr. To the right, there is a gap that you can jump over, leading to another battle with Draugr and Nightmares. Climb the chain on the right, read the Rune Tablet, and swing across to the next area using the grapple point on the left.
On the other side, a chest awaits you. Deal with another Draugr and a few more Nightmares before kicking down the chain. Climb down to the platform below and break the second chain that holds Lyngbakr.
Third Chain
When the whale moves its flipper, it clears away some debris, revealing a Wretch nest. Destroy the nest to reveal one of those explosive spawners. Grab one and toss it into the nearby rubble to find a red chest.
Grab another explosive and head to the edge of the newly discovered platform. From here, you will notice a pile of rubble blocking a distant dock. Throw the explosive to clear it. Now, lift the nearby gate.
Return to the chain connected by the Rune Tablet with another explosive from that place. Destroy the rocks there so you can swing across the gap and grab another red chest. Crawl through the nearby cave to find another chest, and there's also a raven to shoot down.
Now, get back in your boat and paddle to the dock you just discovered. As you climb, you'll encounter more Draugr, Nightmares, and a group of Grims. After defeating them, grapple across the gap to loot the chest. Lift the nearby gate, and you'll be back where you got your explosives. Use it to find another red chest.
Finally, slide down the rope to open the Legendary Chest. At this point, you'll be able to break Lyngbakr's final chain and free him. You need to row up to the whale’s eye to see Mimir speak with him and prompt him to leave.
