Game Guide by Ornstein on Feb 17, 2025
Captain Stenvar is the first major boss Osvald confronts upon escaping from imprisonment, and the battle occurs near Conning Creek. The battle can be tricky due to Stenvar's massive melee attacks and ability to send out reinforcements. In order to emerge victorious, you need to master enemy waves, exploit enemy loopholes, and balance offense versus defense.
Learning About Captain Stenvar's Weakness
Captain Stenvar has five swords, polearm, bows, lightning, and darkness attacks. His footmen, whom he sends out as reinforcements, are vulnerable to axe, bow, flame, and wind. Stenvar has five shields, while there are three per footman. Breaking these shields is essential to exposing them to massive harm.
Handling Stenvar's Footmen
One of the essential strategies in this battle involves eliminating Stenvar's footmen first. If these minions get out of control, it makes it hard to deal with the creature. Osvald's Fire magic, coupled with Castti's Axe Cleave, proves very efficient against them.
By employing Osvald's AoE magic spells and Castti's multi-hit axe, you get an easy way out by cracking open their shields and eliminating them. Having cleared the way by eliminating the footmen, you are able to tackle Stenvar without any further distractions.
Taking advantage of Stenvar's Weak Points
Captain Stenvar has one chief weakness, which lies in Sword strikes. Hence, both Hikari and Throné are useful companions during this battle. If you employ Hikari's Aggressive Slash, you get an easy way out by cracking Stenvar's shield, enabling you to deal with massive hits.
If you have an aggressive enough Throné, she has enough speed stat, so she can deal massive Sword hits as well. In addition, Osvald's Latent Power turns his AoE Lightning magic into an epic single-hit, especially useful when you've wrecked Stenvar's shield.
Handling Stenvar's Attacks
Captain Stenvar has massive body harm capacity. Downward Swing is an anti-unit, heavy-striking ability, while Mass Punishment does party fire-elemental harm. Special Orders are also executed by him, buffing an allied Physical ability while debuffing Physical Defense, while Destroy Evidence, an elementary ability that has fire-elemental quality, does single-unit harm.
Castti, on the other hand, has to heal and debuff Stenvar ability power. His Shackle Foe ability lowers the physical harm dealt by Throné, so you have to bear it.
Party Composition and Strategy
An even party composition by the addition of Hikari, Osvald, Throné, and Castti fits well enough for this battle. Sword abilities, so Hikari and Throné deal massive harm, while Osvald penetrates shields and does massive magic harm. Castti has to heal and support, applying concoctions so as to remove debuffs while maintaining party health. If you need an alternative character, consider someone who can exploit Stenvar's limitations, such as Ochette or Bow attacks.
Rewards and Next Steps
After you defeat him, you get a silver-filled Pouch containing silver from him, besides gaining the Axe of Avarice. It serves as a tipping point in Osvald's quest, preparing him for the next crucial challenge by Montwise, Chapter 4. By this time, you must have Level 36, so you'd bear the next confrontation.
If you expect to win this arduous battle, you need an even party composition, employing shield-breaking and managing reinforcement and managing Stenvar-heavy strikes.
