Skill growth defines power in Puzzle Quest Immortal, influencing mana gains, damage, and overall efficiency. Understanding how skill points, Temple points, Awards, and temporary boosts interact allows you to optimize progress without wasted investment. This guide explains how skills level up, how to allocate resources, and what each increase actually does in battle.

How to Level Up Skills

Heroes cap at level 100, yet you can usually beat the game before reaching level 60 and even level 50, so there is no need to keep going unless you enjoy the challenge. Once you build the Temple in your Citadel, you can spend gold to buy points that increase skill levels.

You can buy up to two Temple points per level of your hero, which means a total of 100–120 points at level 50–60 and a total of 200 at level 100. In contrast to skill points, one Temple point increases any skill level by one.

Therefore, Temple points are great to level up secondary and tertiary skills, saving up skill points for primary skills. The cost to buy one Temple point equals 450 gold plus 50 per skill level, so the higher the skill level, the more expensive it becomes.

Awards, Gear, Spells, and Mounts

Certain missions grant Awards that permanently raise the level of some of your skills. The extra levels are immediately added and count toward gear requirements and Temple point price. Some gear items and spells can increase your skills during battles, but this type of increase does not work out of battle, so it does not count toward gear requirements or Temple point price.

Equipping a mount increases one of your skills during battle depending on the mount and its level; these increases also do not count outside of battle for requirements or pricing.

Effects of Leveling Up Skills

When you level up skills, their effects become stronger. Elemental Masteries increase extra mana obtained from matching gems of their colors, Battle increases extra damage dealt by matching gems, and Cunning increases the extra effect of wildcards while also granting extra gold and experience from wins.

Some effects increase linearly regardless of level, while others grow more slowly as levels rise, which means the more you invest in a single skill, the lower the general return. This tradeoff matters when balancing upgrades between main and secondary skills.

For mana focus, leveling one Mastery to level 100 while leaving the rest at zero gives +151% mana for that color and +0% for the others, averaging +37.75% across all four colors. Spreading the same investment to raise all four Masteries to level 25 yields +76% mana across every color, totaling +304%.

For Lucky Match %, going all-in on one Mastery results in a 14.53% chance for that color and 0% for others (an average of 3.63%), whereas spreading to four colors produces 9.38% across all colors (37.53% total). Going all-in is better when you mostly focus on a single color; spreading points is more efficient if you want mana of every color or aim to maximize Lucky Matches in any gem.

In the case of the base stats of Elemental Masteries and Battle, most levels will not grant a visible improvement immediately because mana and skull damage equal one per matched gem or skull plus the corresponding bonus, rounded up.

The final number does not increase until the decimals from the bonus add up to the next whole number. Understanding this rounding helps set expectations about when an incremental level will convert into tangible gains.

Practical Allocation Advice

Use Temple points to raise secondary and tertiary skills efficiently and preserve your scarce skill points for your primary focus. Consider whether you want concentrated power in a single color or broader consistency across all colors.

If the build relies on one element, heavy investment in that Mastery pairs well with gear and spells that accelerate that color. If the build rotates colors or prizes frequent Lucky Matches, spread Mastery levels more evenly.

Always weigh the increasing gold cost of Temple purchases against the diminishing returns of very high levels, and remember that temporary boosts from gear, spells, and mounts will not help with gear requirements or Temple pricing outside of battle.
