Game Guide by Groot on Aug 17, 2025
Tesshu Yamaoka becomes available through the same Rise of the Rōnin mission as Koto Nakazawa and represents an ally you encounter earlier in the story before gaining the opportunity to recruit him. His recruitment demonstrates how characters can transition from tournament opponents to valuable allies.

Yamaoka offers counter-attack enhancement capabilities and traditional katana expertise.
How to Unlock Tesshu Yamaoka
To unlock Tesshu Yamaoka as your ally, you must complete the "Temper, Temper" ronin mission. This mission provides access to both Yamaoka and Koto Nakazawa simultaneously, allowing you to recruit both allies through a single mission completion.
You first encounter Yamaoka much earlier in the story during the "A Show for the Shogun" ronin mission, where you fight him as the first opponent in the tournament matches. This initial combat encounter establishes his martial abilities and introduces his character before recruitment becomes possible.

The "Temper, Temper" mission becomes available through story progression and involves various combat scenarios and objectives that must be completed successfully. The mission includes encounters that develop both characters' relationships with your protagonist.
During the mission, you will face different challenges that showcase the combat capabilities of both potential allies and demonstrate their willingness to join your cause after witnessing your abilities and character.

Successfully completing all objectives within the "Temper, Temper" mission will make both Yamaoka and Nakazawa available as permanent allies. The dual recruitment reflects their shared circumstances and mutual decision to support your mission.
Combat Abilities and Equipment
Tesshu Yamaoka only fights with a katana. He is an expert in traditional Japanese sword fighting styles that come from his past as a warrior and his physical training. His skill with the katana shows that he knows how to fight the right way.
He has no secondary weapon, focusing entirely on maximizing his effectiveness with the katana and the various techniques available to single-sword specialists. This specialization allows him to develop mastery over his chosen weapon type.

His blessing ability is called "Rampaging Oni," which increases damage dealt when using counter attack techniques during combat encounters. This enhancement rewards defensive gameplay that emphasizes timing and reaction to enemy attacks.
The counter attack focus makes his blessing particularly valuable for players who prefer defensive combat approaches that rely on parrying, blocking, and responding to enemy initiatives rather than maintaining constant offensive pressure.
Bond Level Rewards and Skill Development
When you reach maximum bond level with Tesshu Yamaoka, he provides rewards that focus on physical enhancement rather than combat training. Unlike many other allies, Yamaoka does not teach combat styles, instead offering skill point development opportunities.
At maximum bond level, Yamaoka grants you two dexterity skill points, which can be invested in the dexterity skill tree to enhance agility, accuracy, speed-based combat abilities, and reaction times during various gameplay situations.

The dexterity skill points prove valuable for improving overall combat effectiveness, movement capabilities, precision-based activities, and defensive reaction capabilities throughout the game.
The combination of increased damage from counterattacks, traditional katana skill, defensive combat focus, and dexterity skill point rewards makes Yamaoka useful for players who like defensive techniques that focus on timing, accuracy, and timing over aggressive offensive strategies.
When combined with defensive game styles that use parrying, blocking, and counterattacking as main combat moves, his blessing works especially well, giving big damage boosts to players who get good at timing their defenses and recognizing enemy attack patterns during tough battles.
