Sea of Thieves Guide | Best Weapons in the Game
Every weapon and throwable has its unique perks, but which one is the most suitable for you?

This guide gives you a rundown of all of Sea of Thieves' primary weapons and throwables. Each section goes into great depth about how weapons work, their benefits, and the best way to use them, so you can pick the arsenal that fits your play style the best.
Throughout this guide, you will find clear subheadings and paragraph-style explanations to help you master each armament.
Sword

The Sword is one of the most versatile and functional weapons despite its reputation as the most hated. The Sword deals 25 damage per hit, and landing the first hit allows you to chain a three‑hit combo for a total of 75 damage.
The Sword also offers the Sword Dash, a powerful attack that deals 60 damage after a one‑second charge; missing this attack incurs a movement cooldown.
Beyond raw damage, the Sword can stun enemies on hit, locking them in place, and deliver knockback if you strike a midair enemy or perform a sword lunge.
Its defensive block ability protects against enemy sword strikes, and while blocking, you can hop quickly in any direction. Block hopping even lets you phase through an enemy's hitbox to gain a tactical advantage.
By holding the block before activating Sword Dash and then jumping at the moment of acceleration, you can execute a super jump or a super Sword Dash. This technique lets you clear the length of a Sloop and inflict damage as if performing a normal Sword Dash.
Additionally, performing a Sword Dash into the water allows you to skim across the surface at high speed.
The Sword functions as a movement tool, a defensive tool, and a formidable weapon. It is recommended to include the Sword in your loadout on all platforms, especially for close‑range combat and scenarios where gunpowder supplies are low.
This weapon is beginner‑friendly for securing kills, though opponents are likely to send angry messages if felled by a Sword.
Blunderbuss

The Blunderbuss excels at close‑range engagements and is the only weapon capable of a guaranteed one‑shot kill. It fires a shotgun blast of 10 pellets, each dealing 10 damage.
To secure a one‑shot kill, every pellet must hit—this requires point‑blank range and aiming down sights to tighten the pellet spread. It is crucial to aim at the center of the enemy's hitbox, as Sea of Thieves does not reward headshots and the head's hitbox is too small for one‑shot kills.
With a reload time of 2.7 seconds, the Blunderbuss can be fired rapidly but remains limited by its effective range. An added perk is the knockback effect: shooting an enemy climbing a ladder can send them flying off your ship.
The Blunderbuss is ideal for surprise attacks and counters swords effectively. To counter a Blunderbuss, maintain constant movement to make landing all pellets difficult.
Sniper
The Sniper is revered for its long‑range stopping power and role in countering enemy cannon fire. It deals 70 damage per shot, and its quick aim‑down‑sights time allows for quick scopes in closer quarters.
However, with a reload time of 3.1 seconds, a second follow‑up shot is often unfeasible if the target heals. The optimal strategy is to pair the Sniper with another weapon: weaken your target at range, secure the health advantage, then finish the engagement with swift precision.
Flintlock Pistol

The Flintlock Pistol is underrated yet offers a balanced mix of damage and speed. Each shot deals 55 damage, requiring two shots to kill, and boasts the fastest reload time of 2.3 seconds. Fast aim‑down‑sights and reload speeds reward a fast‑paced playstyle, provided your aim is precise.
The range is sufficient for shipboard combat, though the Sniper remains preferable for extremely long‑range engagements. Combining the Pistol with the Sword is considered a top-tier loadout for versatile combat.
Knife and Double Barrel Pistol
The Knife and the Double Barrel Pistol were added in Season 12. The Knife lets you fight in three ways: a quick jab does less damage, a heavy stab does more damage, and a thrown knife does damage from a distance.
It sacrifices the Sword's movement perks for improved ranged capability. The Double Barrel Pistol resembles the Flintlock Pistol but trades some damage and range for a faster rate of fire; it also allows you to charge and release both barrels simultaneously for burst damage.
Throwables and Special Items
Throwables include Blunder Bombs, Firebombs, and the Skeleton Collar. Blunder Bombs are the most overpowered throwable—carry five for emergency use, as they can secure two‑hit kills with splash damage and knockback.
Firebombs serve more as a nuisance, ideal for sabotaging lower decks by opening holes, though they may set you ablaze. The Skeleton Collar is situationally useful for stalling opponents but is not a primary combat tool.

Powder Kegs function as weapons of mass destruction, perfect for trolling unsuspecting crews. Special loot weapons include the Trident, Ashen Wind Skull, and Skull of Siren Song. These items have limited ammo and slower times‑to‑kill, making them better suited for PvE, though they remain entertaining for PvP trolling.
The Trident can be charged to unleash three attack sizes—30, 60, or 90 damage—and supports up to 30 attacks before breaking. The Ashen Wind Skull ignites surroundings but lacks combat efficiency. The Skull of Siren Song delivers continuous damage with a respectable time‑to‑kill but slows movement while equipped.
Because you can equip two weapons simultaneously, you should experiment with every combination, as each pairing demands a unique playstyle.
Rather than viewing your arsenal as primary and secondary, consider both weapons as equal partners, working together to achieve the fastest possible time‑to‑kill across all combat scenarios.
