Why Steam Machine is More Than Just a Gaming PC?

Steam Machine has become a point of discussion around what a compact gaming system should offer. Much of the criticism focuses on price, performance, and the use of upscaling. At the same time, the appeal comes from having PC games, emulation, and a Steam library available from a living room setup.

For users who want something between a console and a desktop PC, the Steam Machine offers a different approach. The amount of hate surrounding the Steam Machine has become part of the discussion. A lot of people dislike the system despite never playing it or having any interest in playing it.

Yet, they still watch videos about it and leave comments saying that buying one is a mistake. We don't have to agree with that view. If we enjoy the Steam Machine, that is what matters.

Steam Machine is About How It is Used

There is also a lot of misinformation suggesting that it is a bad product and that nobody should buy it. But after using it, we can see why the system works for the way we want to play. Steam Machine is not meant to be a system that plays Cyberpunk at ultra settings in native 4K. That is not why we bought it. We bought it because we are fans of the Steam Deck and have been using it since day one.

Playing the Steam Deck in dock mode is not always the experience we want. The goal is to have the same games available at higher image quality and better frame rates when playing on a larger display. Steam Machine provides that because it is six times more powerful than the Steam Deck. Steam Deck can only go so far when being used in dock mode.

The comparison is similar to the difference between the Switch 1 and Switch 2. The first system works well in handheld mode, but some newer games do not look as good in dock mode. A newer system brings more power, and the Steam Machine follows a similar idea.

We use the Steam Machine as a companion system. It is not replacing a desktop PC with more power. Instead, it gives us a system that can sit in the living room and let us play the games we already enjoy from the couch.

Upscaling is Part of Modern Gaming

A common criticism is that the Steam Machine uses FSR upscaling. We can understand the concern, but upscaling is already part of gaming across different platforms. PlayStation and Xbox also use upscaling tools to produce their final image. You are not always getting a native-resolution image on modern gaming hardware, so the use of upscaling does not make the Steam Machine unusual in that regard.

What matters more is whether the system delivers the experience we want. For us, the answer is yes. We can play games like Spider-Man and Halo at 1440p, and the system provides the type of living room experience we were looking for. One of the main reasons we enjoy the Steam Machine is that it is an open system.

You can use emulation, and we play a lot of different emulators on it. That flexibility is part of the appeal. We are not limited to one type of game. We can play retro games, access our Steam library, and use the system in different ways depending on what we want to play.

We also like that an online subscription isn't required to play games online. That gives the system another benefit compared with the way some console platforms work.

A Large Steam Library Fits the System

We have a Steam library with more than 650 games, and most of them are playable on the Steam Machine. That gives us another reason to use it. Instead of sitting at a desk, we can move into the living room, connect the system to a large TV, sit on the couch, and play the games already in our library. That was the main goal.

Steam Machine is also small enough to fit into the living room without needing a large PC tower. A desktop PC with RGB lighting can take up more space and may not fit the way everyone wants in a living room. Steam Machine can simply sit there without becoming the focus of the room. Steam Machine gives us a console-like experience while keeping the features of a PC.

That combination is the main reason the system works for us. You can play games, use emulation, access a Steam library, and move away from the desk without giving up the PC side of gaming. We do not need the system to replace every other device. We only need it to handle the role it was purchased for.

That is also why comparisons with other systems can miss the point. We do not need the Steam Machine to compete with a desktop PC in every scenario. We want a system that lets us play games in the living room without putting a full PC setup there.

The Price Still Matters

Steam Machine is more expensive than many people would want, especially with the current RAM crisis and the state of the economy. That is a valid part of the discussion. At the same time, we are happy to have one now before prices potentially rise. The price matters, but so does the experience we get from using the system.

For us, the value comes from being able to use it every day for the games we want to play. The decision is also personal. We do not expect everyone to want a Steam Machine, and nobody is being forced to buy one. The same idea applies to other gaming hardware.

We are not the biggest fans of the PlayStation 5 Pro, and when its price was announced, we talked about why we thought the system was a bad deal. But criticizing a product is different from constantly watching content about it and telling people they are stupid for buying it. If you do not like a product, there is no reason to keep following it.

We can apply the same logic to the Steam Machine. You do not have to buy it, and you do not have to watch content about it. At the same time, people who enjoy it should be able to use it without being told that their choice is wrong.

For us, the Steam Machine does what it needs to do.

We wanted an open platform, access to emulation, a way to use our Steam library, and a system that could provide a console experience without requiring a desktop PC in the living room. We are also testing more games on it. Black Myth: Wukong is one of the games being tested because it did not run well on the Steam Deck.

Testing games like that can show where the Steam Machine fits compared with the Steam Deck. For now, we are having fun with it. Emulated games running at 1440p are one of the uses we enjoy most, and the system gives us another way to play games without sitting at a desk. Steam Machine does not need to replace a desktop PC or compete in every performance category.
