In WWE 2K26, the Special Guest Referee mode lets you take over the match and make all the big calls. You get to be a referee and choose who wins and loses. You have power over the count, can break the rules, and even fight the fighters.

If you have just started the game, this mode is a great way to change how the action feels. Once you learn the basic steps, you will be able to run matches exactly how you want.

Setting Up Your Match

You start by going to the Play menu and selecting Exhibition. Look through the match types to find one that allows for a Special Guest Referee. This works for normal matches, Triple Threats, Tag Teams, and even big events like Hell In A Cell. Once you pick the match, go into the referee options and turn on Special Guest Referee. You can choose any superstar or even your own character from MyRise to be the official. Picking the right match type first is important so you do not have to start over later.

Learning the Referee Controls

You need to know the button layout so you do not get confused during the match. You can switch between being a referee and a wrestler by pressing the Touchpad on PS5 or the View Button on Xbox. To get into position for a pin or to check a submission, move the Right Stick down. You count the pin by pressing X or A. If someone is too close to the edge, call a Rope Break with Circle or B. You can stop a count by pressing L1 or LB. If you want to give a warning, press Square or X, or hold it down to call for a Disqualification. You can also argue with players by pressing Up on the D-Pad.

How to Count and Screw Over Wrestlers

Being the official means you control the speed of the match. You should stand close to the wrestlers so you can start a count quickly. Tap the button for a normal speed, or hold it longer if you want to do a slow count to help someone out. For submissions, you decide if the wrestler is tapping or not. You can perform a Screwjob by holding X or A during a submission to force a win for your favorite player. You can also choose to ignore a Rope Break if you want to be mean. If a wrestler gets mad and tries to argue, use the Argue button to keep things moving.

Staying in the Match and Fighting

There is a Referee Meter at the top of your screen that shows how fair you are being. if you cheat too much or ignore the rules, the meter will empty and you will be kicked out of the match. You can turn this meter off in the options if you just want to cause trouble. When you are ready to get involved, switch to wrestler mode and start attacking. You can pick up Weapons, throw people outside, or just beat them down yourself. If you time your attacks right and switch back to referee mode at the right moment, you can avoid getting ejected while still helping your chosen side win.
