Xbox Project Helix vs. PS6: 40% More GPU Power Reported

The performance of next-generation consoles is expected to be much better, but new leaks suggest that Microsoft's Project Helix might have superior hardware to PlayStation 6. Reports say that the system-on-chip size, GPU compute units, CPU power, memory capacity, and bandwidth are all different.
The most important question is how much of that extra hardware power will actually improve game performance. According to the latest leaks, the next-generation Xbox, reportedly codenamed Project Helix, could be about 40% more powerful than the PlayStation 6. That figure raises questions about where the difference comes from. It could involve the GPU, CPU, memory, or a combination of these components.

Project Helix and the 40% Performance Difference
Based on the leaked specifications, Project Helix appears to have advantages across several areas. Previous specifications have already pointed to differences between the two consoles, but the 40% figure primarily stems from two hardware characteristics. The first is die size. The system-on-chip (SoC) is reportedly about 40% larger in Project Helix.
The leaked figures put the Xbox SoC at roughly 408 mm², compared with around 280 mm² for the PlayStation 6. Depending on the final specifications, that represents roughly a 40% difference, give or take around 5%. The second major difference comes from the GPU. Project Helix is reportedly expected to feature around 68 compute units, while PlayStation 6 could have 52 or possibly 54.
Some of these specifications may still change because the hardware is reportedly still being tested. That would give Project Helix roughly 40% more GPU compute units than PlayStation 6. Those two figures are the main reasons behind the claims of a 40% performance advantage.
CPU and Memory Differences
The GPU is not expected to be the only area where Project Helix has an advantage. The next-generation Xbox is also reportedly expected to feature a more capable CPU with more cores and more powerful cores. Reports also suggest higher memory bandwidth and a larger memory configuration.
The exact memory speed remains unclear, and it could end up being similar on both consoles. To compare overall graphics performance, the GPU remains the most important area to examine. Having around 40% more compute units could give Project Helix a meaningful advantage, provided the rest of the hardware is configured to leverage them.
The situation has some similarities to the previous console generation. Xbox Series X featured a larger GPU, a larger die, and more compute units than PlayStation 5. However, the hardware did not always translate into a consistent performance advantage. Hardware was only part of the story. Development tools and game optimization also played a role.

Clock Speeds Could Determine the Final Advantage
The 40% compute-unit advantage does not automatically mean that Project Helix will deliver 40% higher gaming performance. The final clock speeds for both the CPU and GPU remain unknown. If PlayStation 6 runs its GPU at substantially higher clock speeds, some of the advantage from having more compute units could be reduced. That was one factor that affected the previous generation.
The hope is that Microsoft has learned from the Xbox Series X approach and will let Project Helix run at higher clock speeds. The key factor will be the difference in clock speeds between the two consoles. A PlayStation 6 with fewer compute units could also help increase clock speeds, as a smaller GPU configuration uses less power.
That could make it easier to push the GPU to higher frequencies. One indication that Project Helix could be designed around higher clock speeds is its reported TDP. The leaked power figures suggest a substantial difference between the two consoles. PlayStation 6 has reportedly been associated with around 160W of TDP, while Project Helix could potentially reach somewhere between 250W and 350W.
These figures remain speculative and are based on leaks, but the gap is large enough to consider. A higher-power target could indicate that Project Helix will not only have more compute units and a larger GPU but also run those components at relatively high clock speeds. That doesn't necessarily mean the Xbox will run at higher clocks than the PlayStation 6.
Hardware specifications alone do not determine real-world gaming performance.
The next-generation Xbox is expected to represent a major change from the current Xbox architecture. Reports suggest that Project Helix could function as a hybrid of a traditional Xbox console and a PC. That creates some uncertainty around the development environment. The API, development tools, and overall software architecture could differ from what developers currently use.
Early development tools can greatly affect how efficiently hardware is used. If the tools are not mature when the console launches, some of the additional hardware performance could remain unused during the early part of the generation. Xbox has experienced similar issues before, so it is understandable to worry whether the new platform will repeat them.
If Microsoft delivers mature development tools and lets developers use the additional GPU resources, the reported 40% hardware advantage could show up in actual games. If optimization once again limits the hardware, the difference between Project Helix and PlayStation 6 could be much smaller than the specifications suggest.
