A new feature for the Xbox ROG Ally is currently being internally tested by Xbox Microsoft, called the highlight reels feature. It uses the new neural processing unit built into the Xbox Ally to automatically clip gameplay highlights.

The feature is designed to capture memorable gaming moments without requiring additional downloads or forcing players to leave their games. It is slated not only for the handheld but also for the next-generation Xbox console.

AI and the Role of the NPU

AI is becoming a major focus for Xbox, and the NPU, the part of the chip that controls much of the AI functionality, is expected to play a big role in enhancing the gaming experience. With highlight reels, the Xbox Ally leverages its NPU to automatically detect exciting gameplay moments and clip them in real time.

We are seeing this as one of the first major AI-driven features powered directly by the hardware inside the Xbox ROG Ally. Unlike other handhelds such as the Steam Deck, this is currently a feature they cannot offer. That gives the Xbox Ally a notable edge in the handheld gaming space.

Testing on Ally X Units

Microsoft staffers are currently testing the highlight reels feature on Xbox Ally X units. Microsoft insiders are able to self-host this build on their devices. It appears that this feature is limited to the higher-end model powered by the Z2 Extreme chip, as the standard Xbox Ally does not include the dedicated NPU required for this functionality.

If you own an Ally X, you are essentially on the bleeding edge of this new generation of Xbox hardware. Xbox continues to test many aspects of its upcoming PC-console hybrid system through the ROG Ally platform, making it an early preview of what is coming next.

Built for the Next-Generation Xbox

Many of the features introduced on the Xbox ROG Ally are expected to carry over to the next-generation Xbox console. The upcoming system is rumored to feature a hybridized SOC from AMD, merging PC gaming and console gaming into a unified experience. The ROG Ally is currently serving as a test bed for these innovations.

Recently, the Xbox Ally also received Xbox sound effects added to its interface, making the experience feel more like a traditional console. These changes highlight Xbox’s ongoing commitment to refining its hybrid ecosystem.

Automatic Highlight Capture in Popular Games

According to reports, the highlight reels feature is being focus tested in titles such as Forza Horizon 5, Palworld, League of Legends, Dota 2, Rocket League, Elden Ring, Overwatch 2, Lies of P, Battlefield 6, Call of Duty, Among Us, Fortnite, and Rainbow Six Siege. It is expected that the feature will eventually expand to all supported titles.

We imagine the system will likely use Xbox’s DVR functionality on PC alongside gaming Copilot, if enabled, to detect frenetic or exciting moments and automatically edit them together for social media sharing. Whether it will include transitions, text overlays, or special effects remains unknown, but it is not hard to see how Microsoft could expand on this concept.

A Game-Changer for Content Creators

For content creators, this could be a major advantage. Editing is often one of the biggest pain points when producing gaming content. If highlight reels can automatically package exciting moments into shareable clips, it could significantly reduce editing overhead.

We can see how helpful this would be for sharing boss fights from Elden Ring or intense multiplayer matches. Instead of manually trimming footage and assembling clips, you could rely on the system to handle much of that process. If it even adds stylistic elements on top of basic clipping, that would make the feature even more powerful.

Performance Considerations

One concern raised is whether this feature might impact in-game performance. However, since it utilizes the dedicated NPU inside the system, it should not significantly affect frame rates. The purpose of including a dedicated AI chip is precisely to offload such tasks without reducing gameplay performance.

As long as it does not come at the expense of smooth gameplay, we believe it is a welcome addition. Background features that enhance sharing and engagement are valuable, provided they do not interfere with core performance.

A Strong Future for Xbox Handheld Gaming

The Xbox ROG Ally is already considered one of the best handhelds available, alongside devices like the Steam Deck and the Lenovo Legion Go. With features like highlight reels and deeper AI integration, it continues to evolve beyond traditional handheld capabilities.

We are excited about the direction Xbox is taking with AI-driven gaming tools. If the highlight reels feature delivers as described, it could turn the ROG Ally X into a powerful tool not just for playing games, but for creating and sharing gaming content seamlessly.
