It looks like the secret surrounding Cory Barlog's next project is finally starting to come together after years of guesswork, conflicting rumors, and wild genre guesses. People used to think that Barlog's next game might be a sci-fi shift or a whole new IP, but now it looks more and more likely that it will be set in the world of God of War.

A long time ago, no one was even talking about God of War. Barlog has been working on this project in some way for more than six years. During that time, different ideas about what it would be like have ranged from space operas to completely new franchises.

It wasn't totally ruled out that he might go back to Kratos' world, but it wasn't the main idea either.

That has changed in the past few months. Reports started to line up. The things that insiders said got more specific. All the pieces seem to have fallen into place now, thanks to a job post that was very clear and more confirmation from the inside.

A senior writer at Sony Santa Monica recently talked about how they helped shape the story and artistic direction for a "new franchise within the God of War universe." The job description made it clear that the person would be adding to the well-known IP, creating new stories, and helping with the long-term plan for the franchise. That's not just vague marketing speak; that's clear proof that a new God of War game is in the works.

The size of the part itself also made people look twice. It's already a huge job to be a senior writer at a company like Sony Santa Monica. Barlog is working on something big for the God of War series, as shown by the fact that he's doing this while also helping to shape the game's future. This fits very well with new the new reports. A report said that Barlog's project would take place in a world that people know, but that might not look at all familiar. What you said left the door wide open.

A quote made by Christopher Judge, who voiced Kratos in the God of War (2018)  and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök, came up again and added to the rumors.

judge gave hints that something would happen later in the summer. Even though he didn't say for sure that he was involved, his comments are hard to ignore because he is connected to the brand. Talk about Sony's bigger plans for the series also came up, with references to making God of War bigger in a way that is more related to other games in the series.
Some people thought the similarities to the Marvel Cinematic Universe were scary, but in reality, they might just mean exploring different genres, tones, and character points of view within the same mythological framework. Recently published insider comments added a new twist. A well-known person who leaked God of War said that Sony Santa Monica's next game would be an RPG. Soon after, someone else said that the idea was like an action game.

Those names don't rule each other out. Given how AAA games have changed over the years, an action RPG is completely possible, and maybe even expected. The 2018 remake already had RPG elements, so it wouldn't be strange if they were expanded upon.

Especially interesting is the idea that this might not be about Kratos at all.

There are rumors that it's not an Atreus-focused game, but even that could mean different things. Could Loki be in charge of the story? A prequel where Faye appears? A story focused on Freya? During the Norse age of God of War, a lot of interesting characters were added, each of whom could easily carry their own story.

Branding is another thing to think about. Will it still be called "God of War" or will it be called something else? A small change in the title could mean a big shift in tone while keeping the franchise's personality. The studio logo, the mood, and the final title card in that first reveal trailer are likely to set standards right away.

If what they say is true, the game should be announced sometime this year and come out in 2027. That time frame would work with a demo in late summer, a possible PlayStation State of Play in September, or even a big event like Gamescom.

How long Sony Santa Monica was able to keep the secret is what makes this case so interesting.

People have known for years that Barlog's next project would take place in a well-known world, but it would feel very different from his previous works. That's it. There are no big leaks. There are no known characters. No tips on how to play. The real facts are just now starting to come out, in the same year that the game is said to be coming out. Those rumors could be true, and 2027 could be a huge year for Sony, with both a new Santa Monica Studio game and a bold new take on God of War.
