GTA IV Remaster Rumors are Spreading, But That's Just a Hoax

A platform listing error sparked fresh rumors about GTA IV, but the reality might not be as thrilling as the speculation.

GTA fans are having a déjà vu moment: Rockstar Games is once again the subject of a lot of rumors, this time about a possible remaster of GTA IV. It all started when fans with sharp eyes saw that Rockstar's website said the game would work on the PlayStation 4, which set off a firestorm of speculation on the internet. Many people took this as solid proof that GTA IV Remaster is in the works, according to the sources.

But behind the flashy headlines and viral posts is a harsh truth that many fans may not want to hear. There might not be any real fire, even though there is digital smoke. Over the years, Rockstar has put a lot of its attention on GTA Online, which makes billions of dollars through microtransactions. This source of income has been much more profitable than any single-player remaster could ever hope to be, no matter how nostalgic or passionate the fans are.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar, says it is still committed to single-player games, but recent actions tell a different story. GTA V hasn't gotten any single-player DLC, and other Rockstar games have been left behind in the same way. For many long-time fans, this is a frustrating turn of events, especially for those who are tired of the online grind and want the deep stories that Rockstar used to be known for.

It's not as easy as flipping a switch to bring GTA IV up to date from a technical point of view. A proper remaster would require significant work, given that it was built on an early version of Rockstar's RAGE engine and the now-obsolete Euphoria physics system. When you add in the problems that come with expired music licenses, which are very important to Liberty City's radio stations, the project starts to look like a logistical nightmare.

And then there's the big problem: Michael Hollick, who plays the main character, Niko Bellic. Hollick talked about how he didn't get any royalties after the game did so well. Although GTA IV generated over $600 million in its first week, he only earned $100,000.  This very public fight may have made things worse between the two parties, making it harder to get Hollick to do more voice work and making it even less likely that there will be a real remaster.

Things get even murkier when you look at Rockstar's recent history of remastering. A lot of people were upset when the GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition came out because it had a lot of problems, like bugs, missing content, and bad quality. Grove Street Games, the studio that made it, was quietly put on hold, and Video Games Deluxe was hired to clean up the mess. Since then, rumors have circulated that Rockstar cancelled all future remaster projects due to the ongoing issues. This is the opposite of what people are saying about GTA IV right now.

It's interesting to note that fans were very excited about a Red Dead Redemption remake not too long ago, but Rockstar only gave them a bare-bones port that didn't add much at a high price. If history repeats itself, GTA IV might not get a great remaster, but a simple port with a few upgrades. This potential outcome might disappoint many fans, urging them to manage their expectations.

The real problem might not be Rockstar's plans, but how reliable online gaming news is. One automated response from Rockstar Support to a fan's hopeful message about a PS5 port set off a flurry of articles and posts on social media. One source said in a sarcastic tone that even a Rockstar worker picking their nose can make the news these days. Fans might get a regular PS5 version of GTA IV, like how Red Dead Redemption came to PC with almost no changes.

It's not the best thing, but at least it lets new players see Liberty City's rough streets without having to use old hardware. So why does this rumor persist? Because the desire for a GTA IV remaster is real. Many still believe that GTA IV has the best story and emotional depth of all the games in the series. However, the uncertainty of whether this desire will be fulfilled adds an element of intrigue. The hype train has left the station many times before, but the outcome is always uncertain.

It's clear what Rockstar's top priority is right now: everyone is working on GTA VI, which is said to be one of the most expensive entertainment products ever made. It doesn't fit with the business model or the timeline for a fully realized GTA IV remaster because the development team is focused on making sure the game lives up to ten years of hype.

In the end, fans are left with bits and pieces of information and hopeful guesses. Rockstar may quietly re-release GTA IV for newer consoles, but the idea of a full-scale remaster seems less and less likely. So, fans might lower their expectations before they grab the confetti. Is Rockstar really getting ready to go back to Liberty City and give it a new coat of paint, or are players just chasing shadows in the fog of digital rumor
