Naughty Dog Completes Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet's Cinematic Shoot as 2027 Release Talk Returns

After months of silence, new cast details, development updates, and the completion of performance capture have brought Naughty Dog's upcoming game back into focus.

For months, there was barely anything new to discuss about Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Naughty Dog's upcoming game had gone unusually quiet, leaving fans with little more than the information available since its reveal. But over the last few weeks, things have started moving again, and the latest update could be one of the most important developments surrounding the project so far.

Naughty Dog has confirmed that the game's cinematic shots are now complete. On its own, that might not sound like a major announcement, but the timing makes it more interesting. Before this update, Naughty Dog had confirmed a new cast member, more details about the game's development process had started appearing, and 2027 had returned as a possible release target. Then Naughty Dog announced that the cinematic shoot was complete just days before Sony's new State of Play.

That doesn't automatically mean Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is about to receive a major reveal or show gameplay. Sony has not officially confirmed that the game will be part of State of Play. Still, when a project that has been almost completely silent for months suddenly receives several updates within a few weeks, something has changed.

The latest announcement arrived on August 31, when Naughty Dog revealed that the "very ambitious" cinematic shoot for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet had been completed.

The studio shared an image of Tati Gabrielle, who plays the game's main character, Jordan A. Mun, wearing a performance capture suit. Naughty Dog praised the cast for their work and said they had "crushed it," adding that the studio could not wait to show everyone what the team had created when the time was right.

Of course, completing the cinematic shoot does not mean the game itself is finished. A considerable amount of work remains, including integrating the performances into the game, animation, gameplay development, optimization, bug fixing, and final polishing. That's still a huge step in the right direction for Naughty Dog, though, given how much storytelling, acting, and cinematic presentation matter to their games.

It has also been pointed out that the announcement comes as Sony's next State of Play is scheduled for September 3. Naughty Dog posted its update just before the event, leading to speculation that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet could show up.

There are lots of choices. The game could receive a new trailer, a short gameplay tease, or another update. It is also possible Naughty Dog knows the game won't appear and simply wanted to update fans before attention turned back to the project. For now, expectations should remain under control because Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has not been officially confirmed for the event. The timing may be a coincidence, but it is still interesting that the studio suddenly shared a major production update so close to State of Play.

The release date discussion has also picked up recently, with 2027 once again being mentioned as a possible target.

That is not an official release window from Sony or Naughty Dog, so it remains important to separate rumors from confirmation. Still, the reported 2027 target does not necessarily contradict earlier reports about the project. Now that Naughty Dog has confirmed the cinematic shoots are complete, the possibility arguably feels more realistic than it did before.

An early 2027 launch would still seem optimistic, however. Naughty Dog is known for spending significant time polishing its games near the end of development, making the second half of 2027 feel more realistic. A delay into 2028 wouldn't be particularly surprising either, especially given the scale and ambition attached to the project.

Recent reports have also provided more context about why Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet appears to have been in development for so long. The game reportedly began development around 2020, suggesting Naughty Dog spent roughly six years working on it at full scale.

According to Jason Schreier, however, the situation was more complicated. A large part of Naughty Dog spent years focused on The Last of Us multiplayer project, which eventually became the canceled The Last of Us Online.

After the project was canceled toward the end of 2023, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet reportedly became the studio's main focus.

That changes the development timeline. While the project may have started around 2020, it wouldn't be accurate to assume the entire studio has worked exclusively on it since then. Much of Naughty Dog's resources were focused elsewhere until the multiplayer project was canceled.

Another recent update came from the cast. On August 21, Robin Atkin Downes confirmed that he had worked on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and shared an image of himself wearing a performance capture suit. Downes is no stranger to Naughty Dog, having played Robert in the first The Last of Us and appearing as several characters throughout the Uncharted series, including Navarro, Talbot, and Hector Alcazar.

What remains unknown is exactly who he will be playing in the new game. He could play a villain, someone closely connected to Jordan A. Mun's story, or a smaller character within the game's world. Interestingly, only ten days after Downes shared his performance-capture image, Naughty Dog announced that the entire cinematic shoot was complete. This could mean some recent updates are tied to the final stretch of the same production process.

Not every recent discussion surrounding the game has been positive.

Former Naughty Dog designer Benson Russell recently discussed the risks involved with modern AAA projects that take six or seven years to develop. His main concern was scope creep, where a project continues expanding as more features, systems, and ideas are added throughout development.

Russell suggested that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet could face that risk. However, he no longer works at Naughty Dog and is not sharing inside information about the game's development. Instead, he spoke from his own experience and discussed the challenges that come with increasingly ambitious AAA games.

That discussion raises a reasonable concern. Naughty Dog has described Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as having the deepest gameplay systems the studio has ever created. That sounds promising, but bigger and deeper do not automatically mean better. The more systems a game includes, the more complicated development can become, especially when those systems need to work together smoothly.

The latest developments have also made some reports from last year more interesting. Naughty Dog was reportedly pushing hard to complete an internal demo of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, with some teams said to have been working mandatory overtime. The project reportedly missed certain internal milestones, but the same report said the demo was being prepared for Sony and that the target was around 2027.

Months have now passed since those reports emerged.

More performance capture activity has emerged, Robin Atkin Downes has confirmed his involvement, and Naughty Dog has officially announced that the main cinematic shoot is complete. None of this confirms development is fully back on track, but it does show the project is still making progress.

The most interesting detail remains the internal demo. If Naughty Dog had a playable vertical slice ready to show Sony months ago and has now completed the main cinematic performances, it becomes increasingly clear that the public still hasn't seen any real gameplay from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

That is where the game currently stands. It doesn't appear to be close to release, but the long period of near-total silence may finally be ending. August alone brought several signs of movement, including Robin Atkin Downes confirming his involvement, more information about the development timeline, renewed talk of a possible 2027 release, and Naughty Dog confirming that the cinematic shoots were complete.

Attention has now naturally shifted toward State of Play. The game could appear there, but its absence shouldn't automatically be treated as a sign something is wrong. Naughty Dog has not promised an appearance and may simply be waiting for the right time to show more of the project.

The bigger expectation is what happens over the next few months if 2027 truly remains the intended target. At some point, Naughty Dog will need to show more than another cinematic trailer. The studio has described Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as one of its most ambitious projects and has claimed that it features the deepest gameplay systems in its history.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Gameplay and combat

That makes gameplay the biggest thing still missing from the conversation.

A cinematic trailer can introduce the world, characters, and tone of the game, but gameplay will ultimately need to show what makes Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet different. The combat, in particular, remains something to watch closely, especially considering Naughty Dog's claims about the depth of its gameplay systems.

For now, the completion of the cinematic shoot does not answer every question surrounding Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Its release date remains unconfirmed, the gameplay is still largely hidden, and the project's exact scale is unknown. But after months of silence, real signs of movement are finally emerging.

Naughty Dog has completed a major stage of production, more cast members are emerging, the development timeline is becoming clearer, and 2027 is once again being discussed as a possible release target. Whether the game is shown at State of Play or kept under wraps for a little bit longer, the coming months should give us a better idea of what Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been up to.
