Monolith Gearing Up Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition For Switch 2

Following the smash hit Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, Monolith Soft is aiming for the same kind of success with Switch 2.

Monolith Soft's talent for extracting every last drop of promise from something distinguishes it among Nintendo's studios. Many Nintendo teams, including the Mario and Zelda teams, do this, but Monolith Soft stands out because they design huge, unique RPGs that you can't find anywhere else in the console market. This is remarkable, as it really distinguishes them from Nintendo's usual games, such as Super Smash Bros., Mario, and Zelda.

Their enthusiasm and desire to be among the top has made them one of the most well-known studios under Nintendo's wing, even if they have never sold a game with more than 3 million copies (at least not on their own). Honestly, I believe their future is approaching even more significant with the Nintendo Switch 2. Particularly, given some of the things they have recently said about their approach to game development, their next major RPG seems to be something outstanding.

One thing they noted is that they never accept the status quo; rather, they are constantly striving for better quality, which is great news for their next RPG. The 2025 corporate brochure of Monolith Soft discussed Hirohide Sugiura, one of the co-founders. Essentially, he said they would never be satisfied no matter how many major titles they launched or how much they grew. They will always wish to set sights loftier.

This attitude is especially apparent in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. This is their first honest attempt at polishing a game that was already in high definition, and they really nailed it. Certainly, they have rereleased earlier games before, such as the Wii edition of Xenoblade Chronicles, but that presented an entirely different problem since it was initially designed for older systems. With Xenoblade X, however, they improved an already polished game even more. That sort of commitment and attentiveness to detail is built into their very essence.

And here's the nice part: on Switch 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has a concealed 60 FPS mode that is begging to be activated. This shows that Monolith Soft usually plans. They're most likely working on patches to improve the performance of all of their games, 2, 3, and all the DLC running on the new equipment. Maybe we'll see everything happen soon. Who knows?

Additionally, we know they have been developing their next major RPG for quite some time now. Assuming Xenoblade Chronicles 3 was completed by 2021, they may have been working on something new for Switch 2 over the last three years. Given Nintendo's major events schedule and, later in the year, Direct, I wouldn't be shocked if we soon saw our first hint of what they are working on.

Monolith Soft is always trying to get better, even if things do not always go as planned at launch (cough, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 cough). However, they have developed greatly as a studio—from perhaps 50-70 personnel in times past to almost 300 now. Their creations are among the finest in the business.
