Blizzard has broadcasted a live stream showcasing the planned gameplay for Overwatch 2. Among the most notable changes is the reduction of player count, to now five players versus five players, each with a composition of one tank, two support, and two DPS. Blizzard experimented with other compositions, including four-versus-four and one tank-one support-three DPS, but found the planned meta to offer the best gameplay. To make up for the change, tank characters will be significantly strengthened. One showcased was Winston’s new ranged attack, along with stat increases for other tanks.

Overwatch 2 does not currently have a release date, but when it does launch it will also change the gameplay of the first Overwatch to match. Players have become immediately apprehensive of the change. Even with improvements to tanks, having only one in the match may increase chat toxicity, blame, and harassment. The change would reduce the amount of friends that can play simultaneously, especially if they have grouped since the game’s inception. The change will also probably lead to the dismissal of many paid Overwatch League players, as dedicated tanks would no longer be in demand.

Since its launch, Overwatch has been culling it flexibility to be more competitive. During its initial release, the game advised players to stack duplicates of the same character and create interesting team compositions. Recently, Overwatch’s lead Jeff Kaplan departed Blizzard, and it is unclear if it is at all related to the shifting direction.
