Sony wants a piece of the pie from the mobile game industry. Perhaps more than a piece.

The mobile game industry is the largest and fastest-expanding segment of the global gaming market. With its broad appeal across demographics and global reach, mobile gaming has grown as a dominant force, particularly in emerging markets like India and Southeast Asia. The bulk of games are free-to-play, with monetization via in-app purchases, advertisements, and gacha systems. However, difficulties such as market saturation, privacy concerns, and hardware limits persist, requiring innovation and adaptability to succeed in this highly competitive sector.

Cross-platform play, mobile esports, and major investments from companies like Microsoft and Tencent are all shaping the industry's future. Now, another gaming giant, Sony, has officially entered the mobile gaming sector, and they aren't just dipping their toe in. They intend to employ their big-name IPs to generate synergy with their console games. What does this mean? Essentially, they want to integrate the mobile and console experiences, making them feel like they're part of the same PlayStation ecosystem.

Sony is now collaborating with external partners to get things moving. A notable example is Destiny Rising, a smartphone game created by NetEase Games. This strategy may lead to mobile versions of games in the future, giving PlayStation a firmer footing in the enormous mobile gaming market.

Let's explain why this is such a significant deal. Mobile gaming is not only big but the biggest. In 2024, gamers will spend more than $92.5 billion on mobile titles. It's a billion! It's not surprising that every major gaming firm wants a piece of the pie. Microsoft even spent $70 billion to acquire Activision, mostly to strengthen its mobile footprint.

Meanwhile, Sony is adopting a different strategy. They are developing their mobile games from the ground up. Sure, they've had some success with Fate Grand Order through their subsidiary Aniplex, but now they're adding the PlayStation Studios name to the mix. Initially, they are licensing their intellectual property to external developers.

In the future, we might even see first-party studios develop smartphone games. Herman Holst, CEO of PlayStation Studios Group, discussed this in a recent interview with Famitsu. He utilized Destiny Rising to demonstrate how this idea is coming to fruition. He stated, "In mobile games, we want to develop PlayStation IP in a way that maximizes synergy with the console." To that purpose, we will prioritize relationships with external development studios. He also emphasized the strategic cooperation with NCS OFT, which was launched in November 2023. Then, in October 2024, Destiny Rising emerged.

NetEase Games created and launched a mobile game based on the Destiny IP. So, what might we expect in the future? If Destiny Rising is any indication, we could see mobile versions of AAA games that complement their console counterparts. It might be a wise move. If Sony pulls this off, they might introduce something new and intriguing to mobile gaming while also growing the PlayStation ecosystem even further.
