Silent Hill is entering uncharted ground with Silent Hill f, a forthcoming installment that seems to be among the most important in the franchise so far. Unlike the Silent Hill 2 remake just published, which explores well-known territory, SHf adopts a totally new angle.
For those keen to explore similar themes, a number of independent and Japanese horror movies provide the same feel. Anime Expo on July 4th, 2025, will unveil more information about Silent Hill f, which will be available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox later this year.
Silent Hill f promises to provide a new experience with an original narrative set in 1960s Japan, starring a young main character and more profound cultural themes. The game offers psychological horror in the series' trademark style, with a new inventive team on board.
Established in the made-up Japanese city of Ibizuga Oka during the 1960s, this game represents a significant departure in setting, mood, and tone from earlier titles. The narrative introduces a more cultural context not previously known in the franchise and follows young girl Hinako Shimizu as she negotiates a world fraught with disturbing beings.
Also new is the creative team behind Silent Hill f, including writer Ryukishi07, noted for his work on Higurashi When They Cry, a series combining intense emotional topics with psychological horror. This new perspective preserves the essence of the Silent Hill experience—slow-burning psychological horror emphasizing atmosphere and tension above cheap shocks or blood.
There are a number of games that reflect a somewhat similar mood for players trying to get ready for its release. While other titles, such as Fatal Frame, Corpse Party, Siren, and even Ghostwire Tokyo, bring their distinct viewpoint on Japanese-inspired horror, titles like Amorei, Signalis, and Mouthwashing explore mental distress and personal trauma as main topics. Though developed by a Western studio, Doki Doki Literature Club also has thematic parallels.
At a dedicated panel during Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 4th, 2025—the largest anime convention in North America—fans can look forward to more information about Silent Hill f. Participants will have the opportunity to hear straight from the game's producers, writers, and composers, as well as perhaps get news on gameplay, story, and release date. The game is set to debut in Q4 2025 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox; PlayStation 5 Pro is scheduled for extra features.
