Support for older PlayStation 4 games is starting to fade as the next generation of consoles gets ready to launch.

The race for consoles never really ends, and Sony is showing that once again by focusing on the next big thing in gaming hardware. The PlayStation 5 is still doing well, but the tech giant has already put a lot of work into making the PlayStation 6, which is known internally as "Project Amethyst".

According to sources, architect Mark Cerny is in charge, and AMD is working closely with him. This is the start of another push for a new generation that will make console gaming even better.

The schedule looks like it fits with how Sony usually releases consoles. According to reports, the PlayStation 6 will come out in late 2027, which is about seven years after the last major system launch, which is what the company usually does.

The PlayStation 5 Pro, which will come out in 2026, will be a temporary fix until the next generation comes out. It will give players a better experience in the meantime. Sony's strategy is similar to what it has done in the past: it slowly moves players into the future without leaving the present too quickly.

The PlayStation 4's time is coming to an end, but the PS6 is starting to get more attention.

Starting in the spring of 2026, new titles for the PlayStation 4 will not be able to utilize some of the older PlayStation Network capabilities that are already on the device.

This scheduled phase-out is a strong sign that Sony is getting ready for the shift and making sure that developers are focusing on projects that will be useful in the future, not ones from the past. This kind of thing isn't new at all. Before the PlayStation 5 was released, Sony took a similar approach by reducing support for the PlayStation 3.

As the next console approaches, legacy features begin to fade away. This pushes both gamers and developers to move to newer ecosystems. For people who have been using the PlayStation 4 for a long time, the writing is on the wall: the end of an era is approaching, even though the console remains popular and is still widely used.

There will also be a change in subscription services. PlayStation Plus will stop giving priority to PlayStation 4 games in its monthly offerings starting in January 2026. Although some PS4 games may still be available from time to time, the service will primarily focus on the PlayStation 5. This is like what Sony did with the PlayStation 3 in 2019, just a year before the PlayStation 5 came out. This shows that history is repeating itself.

In the big picture, Sony is carefully balancing things. On the one hand, it keeps putting money into the current generation of consoles by making new hardware and giving strong software support.

On the other hand, it is making small but planned moves toward the next big step. It looks like the countdown to the PlayStation 6 has already started, with more money going into development and reports from people who work there saying that 2027 is the goal launch date.

This has gamers both excited and curious. Will the PS6 change the way we play in ways that the PS5 couldn't? Will it be the start of a new era of performance and immersion? And maybe most importantly, are fans really ready to say goodbye to one of the best consoles ever now that Sony has stopped making the PlayStation 4
