Wolverine May Be Back into the Spotlight at PlayStation’s Next Big Event
Rumors point to a September showcase packed with first-party reveals, and Wolverine’s ready to claw his way back in.

It looks like Insomniac's Wolverine is finally gearing up to step back into the spotlight. According to fresh reports, Sony is preparing another big PlayStation event later this month, and Wolverine is expected to headline the show with a brand-new trailer. If true, it'll be the first official look we've had at the game since its reveal back in 2021.
Now, a lot of people were initially confused when Sony aired that recent 007 First Light State of Play. Some assumed that was the one and only PlayStation event for September. Turns out, that wasn't the case at all. Reliable sources are pointing to another show before the month is over, and this time it's looking like Wolverine could be front and center.

The new report claims Insomniac's Wolverine has a finished trailer ready to go. Even if, for whatever reason, it doesn't appear at this rumored September event, fans apparently won't have to wait much longer, since the Game Awards in December is seen as an ideal candidate too. Either way, it means we are on the verge of some good ol' Wolverine action.
Of course, the game hasn't had the smoothest development cycle. Insomniac was hit with a ransomware attack in December 2023, leading to the leak of sensitive employee information and a ton of in-progress game footage. The fallout from that forced some changes behind the scenes, though the extent of those changes is still unclear. Despite all of that, it sounds like Insomniac has pushed through and has not given up on Wolverine. The game remains a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but as of now, there's still no release window.
Beyond Wolverine, the rumored State of Play is shaping up to be stacked. Reports suggest Bungie's Marathon will get another look, and Sony is also lining up something fresh for God of War fans. Word on the street is that a 2.5D Metroidvania-style God of War project is in the works, alongside a new mainline entry. Phantom Blade Zero could make an appearance, and whispers even mention Naughty Dog's mysterious Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Boy, that's some lineup.
The excitement makes sense when you think about how long people have been waiting to see Wolverine again. Streams and comment sections are full of fans asking, "Where’s Wolverine? Did Sony cancel it?" And honestly, nobody would blame you for assuming the worst. But now we have solid signs that the claws are finally coming back out.
And this is where things get even more interesting. Let's put things into perspective a little bit here. The Wolverine trailer, the gameplay reveal for Sorrows later this year, the re-reveal of Marathon, and the God of War spin-off that's reportedly been ready for a while—all in all, you can sense that even for Sony's standards, that's a lot of first-party content.
Add in the possibility of new projects from Media Molecule, Sony Bend, and Bluepoint, and who knows, maybe a couple of live-service games on offer (not you, Concord), and you have yourself a list that you can't possibly take your eyes off.
Traditionally, Sony saves the big boys like that for a proper PlayStation Showcase rather than a smaller State of Play. Usually, a State of Play focuses on one or two highlights, but when Sony wants to flex their muscles, that's when they brings out the Showcase branding. So while the current chatter frames this as a State of Play, there's reason to wonder if Sony might be holding back a bigger surprise.

There's no reason for you to get picky. Whether it's a State of Play or a full Showcase, the simple fact that Wolverine looks set to return is more than enough to stir hype. Imagine the show ending with those claws slashing across the screen.
For now, nothing has been officially confirmed by PlayStation or Insomniac. It's been three years since Wolverine's initial reveal, and Sony has been sitting on a mountain of first-party projects just waiting for the right moment to resurface.
With September shaping up to be that moment, fans only need a little more patience before the next big PlayStation event kicks off. If Wolverine really does show up this month, it'll finally answer years of silence. Logan's return is inevitable, and when it comes, no matter when it is, now or in December, it's going to blow the roof up to oblivion.
