Following tomorrow's James Bond-focused presentation, new reports suggest Sony isn't done yet, with a larger September State of Play still on the horizon.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has a lot planned for September. Tomorrow's State of Play will be all about IO Interactive's much-anticipated 007 project, but sources in the industry and numerous reports indicate that a different, more traditional State of Play event will take place before the end of the month. PlayStation fans are excited about this because they think big news will come out in the fall.

September has always been one of Sony's best months for showing off games. In the past, they've held several high-profile unveilings and in-depth looks at gameplay during this time. From sneak peeks at God of War: Ragnarök to big games from outside developers, September events often have the kinds of moments that make headlines and keep people talking for months.

According to new reports, earlier rumors pointed to a full-on PlayStation Showcase, but now people are expecting something different. The report states that it's clear the next event will likely be a standard State of Play, rather than a major show. We suggest not getting too excited about this State of Play, as it will likely be mostly standard, but there could still be a few surprises.

Naturally, there is a lot of talk about which games Sony might focus on later this month. It looks like Ghost of Yōtei and SAROS will be the games that win. Ghost of Yōtei looks like it will be Sony's next big first-party release, and a longer look would be great for when it comes out. It makes sense for Sony to give one last marketing push before the launch.

In the past, September events have often been final previews for big exclusives. On the other hand, SAROS will definitely have a gameplay demo later this year. Since it was first mentioned during a State of Play, it makes sense that PlayStation would show new footage during another one of their own shows. The Game Awards could also be used as a stage, but many experts think September is a better choice.

Aside from those two, fans are still holding out hope for Marvel's Wolverine, but sources say fans shouldn't have too high hopes. There is a small chance that it will happen, but there is a chance that the God of War spin-off is more likely to get the attention in the near future. Fans are getting more worried about Wolverine's development schedule, though, as the character stays away from big events for longer.

Other possibilities are Bungie's difficult multiplayer project, Marathon, which has been linked to delays and problems within the company, and the mysterious Fairgame$. However, some say it may be in even more serious trouble. If those projects are still being worked on, Sony may put more money into better projects like Ghost of Yōtei and SAROS.

Remember this important fact: State of Play events don't usually depend on first-party exclusives alone. In the past, these shows have featured a diverse mix of Sony's own games and those developed by other companies. Sometimes, unexpected announcements have stolen the show. Capcom and Square Enix, for example, often use State of Play to release new trailers.

September would be an ideal time for them to showcase new information about upcoming projects. This means we could get a better look at games like the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth DLC, Capcom's next fighting game updates, or even projects that haven't been released yet. Because Sony works so closely with Japanese publishers, fans can expect at least a few surprises from firms outside of Japan.

When you work in the gaming business, timing is everything, and September is a big month for PlayStation. With the holidays coming up, a September showcase gives Sony a chance to reaffirm its market leadership, show off future exclusives, and remind fans why the PlayStation ecosystem will still be strong in 2025.

Additionally, it gives Sony a way to respond to news from competitors. It is reported that Nintendo will host its own Direct in September, while Xbox continues to add more games to Game Pass. Sony will stay at the top of the talk with a well-timed State of Play.

Some fans might be let down if the event turns out to be normal, but history shows that even smaller State of Play programs can have exciting surprises. For example, Sony's first-party plan was set in stone by the shocking news that came out in September 2021. This year's show might not have Wolverine, but it would still be great if it had Ghost of Yōtei, SAROS, and a few shocks from outside the company.

In the end, Sony's September plan seems clear: shine a light on 007 and then follow it up with a State of Play that hints at PlayStation's future. Fans won't have to wait long to find out if it relies on safe bets or sneaks in one shocking surprise.
