Bond’s Rookie Days Get the Spotlight in Sony’s Next State of Play for 007 First Light

IO Interactive promises espionage, action, and a whole lot of pressure to make Bond feel like Bond.

Sony has recently dropped the bombshell news that 007 First Light is about to get its very own PlayStation State of Play, and that alone should tell you this game isn’t being treated like some side project. Thirty-plus minutes of dedicated gameplay time is no small deal. That kind of spotlight is usually reserved for the big boys—think Spider-Man, God of War, or The Last of Us. For Bond to be getting the same stage, it’s clear Sony sees this title as a sibling to their “big boys.”

The setup is bold, too. Instead of handing us the fully polished, martini-sipping Bond we all know, IO Interactive is going back to his early days, his very first mission as an MI6 recruit. That move alone opens the door for more storytelling opportunities, giving Bond an arc that we have not gotten to see much, even in the movies. So what it essentially does is that 007 First Light sells the idea of inclusion; you do not see Bond as the box office spectacle that he is, but you are actually James freaking Bond

If there’s a studio that knows how to sell the fantasy of being a secret agent, it’s IO Interactive. Their Hitman trilogy was a masterclass in spycraft. In the gaming world, it was Hitman that truly paved the path for espionage gaming. After all, turning a fancy party into your personal playground does feel exhilarating, doesn’t it?

But there’s a catch: what 007 First Light does differently from Hitman is that the latter was a slow burn, but when you are James Bond, the word “slow” does not exist in the dictionary. Hitman thrived because you could replay missions a dozen different ways and never get bored. Bond, on the other hand, isn’t niche. He’s mainstream. That means this game has a job in its hands to satisfy both stealth purists and the people who just want to blow stuff up in a tuxedo.

That is one fine line to balance, by the way. Lean too hard into stealth, and the casual crowd will call it boring. Go too heavy on the explosions, and suddenly it’s just another shooter wearing a bowtie. Sony’s State of Play is teasing a mix of car chases, gunfights, and stealth.

In theory, that sounds like the best of Bond. But the real test is how they all mesh together into a singular package. If IO Interactive nails this one, we will get to relive the intensity, the drama, and the high-stakes car chases that we only saw in Daniel Craig’s or Pierce Brosnan’s movies, but once again we cannot emphasize enough that you actually are James Bond, because it’s just mind-boggling to think that he is stepping out of movie theaters and onto our screens.

Here’s the big question, though: IO has never done car chases before. Their specialty is slow-burner, calculated espionage, not breakneck driving sequences. So while the excitement is valid, it’s also fair to be cautious. The devs have got to bring their A game for this State of Play, but in order for them to do that, they will have to get out of their comfort zone.

Over 30 minutes of footage could scream confidence, or it could be a way to calm nerves after years of near silence from IO. But what’s it to us? Sit back, grab your popcorn, and watch Bond’s charisma do the magic. There’s only one thing you have to remember: “The name’s Bond… James Bond.”
