This guide describes the Free Roam experience as a largely exploration-focused environment with scenic regions, vehicles, and horses, and a handful of activities and collectibles to find. It is a standalone, offline experience without online multiplayer.

Unlocking Free Roam

Access to Free Roam is available relatively early: complete a few of the first chapters of the story, and Free Roam will unlock. Once unlocked, a small safe area becomes available that acts as a hub for customization and accessing your Free Roam resources. Free Roam can be entered soon into the playthrough, so progression through the opening chapters is the primary requirement.

Safe House and Customization

Once inside Free Roam, a Safe House acts as a base where you can customize your character. You can change clothing and hairstyles, and more styles become available as you progress. The Safe House provides access to the Wardrobe, Weapons, vehicles, and horses; everything acquired in Free Roam is tied to the same progression system used by the primary Campaign.

Progress Carryover Between Free Roam and Campaign

All progress made in Free Roam carries over to the main story. If you purchase Weapons, vehicles, or earn Collectibles and achievements while roaming, those items and unlocks will be available when returning to the Campaign. Money, unlocked cars, and any weapons purchased or earned in Free Roam remain accessible across modes, so investing time in exploration will directly affect the main playthrough.

What Is Available in Free Roam

In Free Roam, you have access to your Safe House, Wardrobe, Weapons, vehicles, and horses. The map contains a sizable area to explore with relatively few roads, reflecting the setting of the Old Country. The environment is scenic, offering large stretches of landscape that are not seen as thoroughly during the main story, and exploration is the primary focus rather than structured online or multiplayer content.

Map, Exploration, and Fast Travel

The map in Free Roam is large with many scenic regions to visit. As the story progresses, more central points and main locations become available, and those act as hubs for Fast Travel between them. The world is designed for exploration rather than dense road networks—expect open terrain and a slower pace of travel compared with urban settings.

Vehicles, Travel, and Driving

When in Free Roam, any vehicle can be taken, and the entire map is accessible by vehicle. Driving is enjoyable and is one of the more engaging parts of the Free Roam experience. Vehicles and horses unlocked in Free Roam are available in the Campaign, and the driving mechanics make roaming the landscape rewarding even when activities are sparse.

NPCs and Restrictions

Non-player characters in Free Roam are largely invulnerable: there is no functionality to raise a wanted level or attack and damage most NPCs. A few NPCs can be interacted with through dialogue, and specific, limited interactions can be performed within the Safe House. Free Roam is a low-conflict environment focused on exploration rather than combat or provoked encounters.

Activities, Collectibles, and Trophies

Some events and activities can earn you cash while roaming, and the map contains Collectibles that contribute toward trophies and achievements. Collecting these items may be necessary for trophy hunting, and the Collectibles offer additional reasons to traverse the map beyond sightseeing and vehicle acquisition.

Limitations and Current Scope

At present, Free Roam does not include online features, the ability to buy multiple houses or additional Safe Houses, or extensive new mechanics beyond exploration, vehicle and weapon acquisition, and collectible hunting. The mode functions as a straightforward open area tied to campaign progression rather than a complete replacement for online sandbox modes.

Observations on Value

Roaming the map is enjoyable due to the scenic design and driving, and Free Roam exposes areas of the map that the Campaign does not showcase extensively. Whether Free Roam justifies the game's purchase is subjective and depends on how much value is placed on exploration and map discovery versus structured content. Still, the mode does provide a solid way to see more of the world and to acquire items that persist into the main story.
