The major attraction of the PS5 Pro lies in its new software support that enhances existing titles and introduces new levels of performance and image quality. These improvements can be categorized into two groups: games that were already available on the PS5 and later patched, and new first-party and third-party efforts.
The difference in quality between these categories is quite evident. Still, one game stands out as a showcase of what the PS5 Pro can truly achieve—Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Rise of PSSR with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
At launch, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth struggled with image quality in its 60fps mode. The TAA implementation made visuals blurry despite a decent resolution, and even the quality mode failed to deliver crisp imagery. On PS5 Pro, however, the introduction of PSSR completely changed that.
The game's presentation became much sharper and more detailed, with improved clarity and stability. Although PSSR isn't flawless—it introduces minor sub-pixel flicker and shimmer—the difference compared to the original release is remarkable. The 60fps mode paired with PSSR delivers a stable, detailed, and visually clean experience, redefining the standard for PS5 Pro performance.
Third-Party Games Embracing PSSR
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth remains the best example of PSSR, but other third-party games have also successfully utilized it. PSSR's ability to improve sharpness and clarity enhances The Crew Motorfest, providing players with a cleaner 60fps experience than the game initially offered.
Control: Ultimate Edition is another good candidate, and Remedy's use of PSSR really stands out. It adds a ray tracing mode that can run at 60 fps, which was only possible at 40 fps on the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X. Players can turn PSSR on or off to find a balance between visual quality and performance. The performance impact is only 5 to 10 fps.

Assassin's Creed: Shadows and Black Myth: Wukong
Another great example is Assassin's Creed: Shadows. It was first released without PSSR, but a later patch added it without any problems. The update made the edges crisper, the visuals more consistent, and the sub-pixel detail resolution better, notably in the leaves. The PS5 Pro version of the game also features significant graphical improvements not available on the standard platform, including RTGI, RTAO, and specular reflections.
Many people were astonished by Black Myth: Wukong's PSSR implementation, which was created on Unreal Engine 5. Although UE5 struggles with upscaling technology, the game nonetheless boasts clear, detailed graphics with minimal noise. The main problem is that its legacy performance mode doesn't use RTGI or lumen illumination, which makes the improvement less clear but still noticeable.
Improved Classics Through Patches
Certain early-generation titles have been updated to meet the PS5 Pro's standards. Demon's Souls, for example, now runs at 4K60, offering the quality mode's fidelity with performance mode's smoothness—precisely what players expected from the PS5 Pro promise.
Similarly, The Last of Us Part I and Part II now feature a dedicated "Pro Mode," delivering perceptually 4K60 gameplay with a 1440p internal resolution and PSSR upscaling. The older modes remain available, now including an unlocked framerate option that runs approximately 30% faster than before, offering both flexibility and improved performance.
Kalisto Protocol's 8K Ambition
The Kalisto Protocol leverages the PS5 Pro's hardware in impressive ways. Its performance mode runs at 60fps with added RT reflections and RT shadows—effects previously limited to the 30fps quality mode.
There's also an 8K quality mode, reportedly running at a resolution higher than native 4K internally and upscaling to 8K using temporal techniques. While direct testing is limited due to 8K display requirements, it demonstrates the console's future-ready capabilities.
Gran Turismo 7: The PS5 Pro Showpiece
Gran Turismo 7 stands out as one of the most complete demonstrations of the PS5 Pro's capabilities. The game now includes in-game ray tracing—something absent in its original release outside of replay mode. The RT reflections are exceptional, covering both matte and glossy surfaces, and providing lifelike environmental reflections.
In its quality mode, players can enjoy 2160p visuals with RT reflections, while performance enthusiasts can opt for native 4K120fps gameplay. The previous 120fps mode was capped at 1080p, so this improvement is substantial. With VRR enabled, the experience remains fluid even when frame rates fluctuate between 110 and 120 fps.
Replays also benefit, running at 60fps with full ray-traced reflections for the first time since Gran Turismo 4 on PS2. Additionally, Gran Turismo 7 includes an 8K mode, believed to upscale from 2160p to 8K. 8K mode requires display stream compression and can't be recorded with regular equipment. Still, it's another indication of how advanced the PS5 Pro's display capabilities are.

Changing what it means to have a PS5 Pro
These games, such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Gran Turismo 7, demonstrate how PSSR and other advanced rendering techniques have transformed the PS5 Pro landscape. We can see that creators are not only improving frame rates and resolutions, but also employing new methods to enhance the stability, immersion, and visual accuracy of games.
Each update is a step toward realizing the full potential of Sony's enhanced platform when you play these improved versions.
