September is already a busy month for video game announcements, with PlayStation officially confirming a new State of Play presentation and Nintendo fans still trying to figure out when the company will hold its next Direct.

You now have a confirmed date on the PlayStation side, while Nintendo's plans remain unconfirmed despite a growing amount of speculation. The two potential events could give you plenty to follow as the industry moves toward the holiday season.

PlayStation has confirmed that its next State of Play will take place on September 3 at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

The presentation will then be followed immediately by a separate State of Play Japan broadcast featuring Yuki Kaji as its host. According to the announcement, the two broadcasts will include updates from studios around the world, along with more profound looks at upcoming games from creators in Japan and across Asia.

The timing of the event is worth noting because State of Play presentations have often taken place later in the day, with 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time being an earlier slot than you might normally expect. PlayStation has not provided much detail about the overall length of either presentation, which leaves the exact scale of the event unclear.

The announcement also does not reveal a full list of games that will appear, although it does confirm that PlayStation Studios and third-party partners will be represented. That leaves plenty of room for speculation about what else the presentation could show.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one game that’s already been highlighted for the main State of Play and will get an extended look from Square Enix. This seems to be one of the main points. PlayStation wants you to pay attention to, especially since the company specifically pointed out the game’s big world in its announcement.

Once announced and with a release date set, Square Enix has established itself by repeatedly showcasing its flagship games. So, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is probably going to get a lot of love when the presentation happens.

The State of Play Japan broadcast will take a slightly different approach, focusing more heavily on games coming from developers in Japan and other parts of Asia.

Expect deeper coverage of upcoming titles, new gameplay announcements, and other information that may be of particular interest to those markets. Having the Japanese presentation immediately follow the main State of Play makes September 3 feel like a larger PlayStation announcement day rather than a single short presentation.

The back-to-back structure has also led to speculation about the size of the main presentation. Because PlayStation is putting two broadcasts together on the same day, you could interpret that as an attempt to cover different groups of games and audiences without putting everything into one presentation.

It could also simply be a way to give Japanese and Asian developers their own dedicated space rather than squeezing those announcements into the main event. At this point, though, the exact reason for the format is still not clear from the announcement itself.

While PlayStation has now provided something concrete, Nintendo fans are still working with rumors. Speculation about a Nintendo Direct has started circulating again, with September 10 being repeatedly mentioned as the possible date for the company's next presentation.

The date has not been officially confirmed, but the rumor has gained attention partly because of the timing of other Nintendo-related announcements. You should therefore treat September 10 as a rumored date rather than a confirmed event.

One of the reasons the rumor has gained traction involves Just Dance. The series has frequently been associated with Nintendo Direct announcements, and information surrounding Just Dance has sometimes helped fans predict when Ubisoft's game could be shown. That has encouraged people to connect the available information and suggest that a Nintendo presentation could be coming on September 10.

If Nintendo does hold a Direct in September, there are several areas where you could reasonably expect the company to provide updates.

Zelda is one of the biggest possibilities, particularly because Ocarina of Time is still expected to receive a new release later in the year according to the information discussed in the transcript. The exact nature of that project remains unclear, with it being described as a possible remake, remaster, or reimagining.

Nintendo also has another reason to perform well as the holiday season approaches. The Nintendo Switch 2 has already received a $50 price increase in the United States, meaning Nintendo needs compelling software to help maintain interest in the system.

The company has announced bundles involving games such as Mario Kart World, while another upcoming title has also been mentioned in connection with Switch Sports. More software announcements could give potential buyers additional reasons to pick up the console during the holiday shopping period.

A September Direct could also focus heavily on third-party games. The holiday season is getting closer, and there are likely to be more ports and multiplatform games coming to Nintendo's latest hardware. A Nintendo Direct would give these games a major platform to showcase their features and build interest among Switch 2 owners.

A Nintendo Direct would give the company an easy way to put those titles in front of a large audience while also reminding players that the Switch 2 has a growing software lineup. This could be particularly useful if Nintendo wants to maintain momentum through the end of the year.

There is also a larger expectation surrounding Nintendo's first-party lineup.

Some of the games released for the Switch 2 so far still carry a noticeable amount of Nintendo Switch DNA, and many players are waiting to see what Nintendo can do when developers are able to focus entirely on the newer hardware.

You could therefore see September's rumored Direct as an opportunity for Nintendo to demonstrate what the Switch 2 can really do. Whether that happens remains unknown, but the demand for more first-party announcements is clearly part of the current discussion.

A new 3D Mario game is another title that has been mentioned in speculation, although there is no confirmation that such a project will appear at a September presentation. Some fans treat the possibility as a hopeful prediction rather than something based on solid information.

Nintendo has not officially revealed whether this rumored Direct will show a new 3D Mario game. For now, that means you should separate the more realistic expectations from the larger fan theories surrounding the event.

The broader Nintendo situation is also interesting because the company's presentations this year have reportedly leaned more heavily on third-party software than some fans expected. There are still several major first-party titles that people are waiting to hear about, particularly games that could demonstrate the capabilities of the Switch 2 more clearly.

A strong Direct could therefore help Nintendo address that gap by showing upcoming first-party projects alongside third-party releases. It would also give the company a chance to build momentum ahead of the holiday season.

For PlayStation, however, the situation is much clearer because the State of Play has already been confirmed.

You know the exact date and time, and you already know that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will receive an extended look. The Japanese presentation should provide additional coverage of games from developers in Japan and Asia, potentially giving you announcements that might not receive as much attention during the main broadcast.

The two September events also arrive at an intriguing point in the gaming calendar. The holiday season is approaching, major releases are beginning to pile up, and both PlayStation and Nintendo have reasons to showcase what is coming next.

PlayStation can use its State of Play to highlight upcoming games and third-party partnerships, while Nintendo could potentially use Direct to strengthen the Switch 2's holiday lineup. If the September 10 Nintendo rumor turns out to be accurate, you could end up with two major platform presentations within a single week.

For now, the important distinction is between what has actually been confirmed and what is still speculation.

PlayStation's State of Play and State of Play Japan are officially scheduled for September 3 at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth already confirmed as a major part of the presentation. Nintendo, meanwhile, has not officially announced a September 10 Direct despite the growing number of claims surrounding that date.

Either way, September is already starting with some notable activity. PlayStation has a confirmed presentation coming on September 3, and the possibility of a Nintendo Direct a week later has given Nintendo fans plenty to speculate about.

With Zelda, potential third-party ports, more Switch 2 software, and long-awaited first-party projects all part of the broader discussion, there is a lot that could potentially be shown. The next few days should make it much clearer whether September will become one of the busier announcement periods of the year.
