Shinsaku Takasugi represents one of the key allies whose survival depends on your faction choices and mission completion in Rise of the Rōnin.

As Sakamoto's friend, he offers four Bond missions that become available through story progression and specific decision-making during critical battles.

Initial Requirements

You unlock Takasugi's missions after completing the "Follow Your Blade Twin" main mission when you discover your twin remains alive. His first mission, "Try Your Luck", involves gambling activities where you place bets and engage in combat with opponents who challenge you during the games.

Story-Dependent Missions

Something to Believe In becomes available after completing "The China Town Kiheitai" main mission. During this mission, you inform Takasugi that enemy forces have captured their master, creating urgency for his rescue or recovery.

Where There's a Will unlocks in Chapter 3, but accessing this mission requires specific faction alignment. You must choose the anti-Shogun faction during the Battle of the Forbidden Gate. Selecting the Shogun faction instead creates deeper friendship bonds with Takasugi, which paradoxically leads to his death.

Final Mission Requirements

The Spice of Life becomes available after completing "The Feud in Aburanokoji" main mission. You may also need to complete Fukuzawa's "In Search of New Discoveries" Bond mission before accessing this final mission with Takasugi.

Survival Mechanics

Takasugi's survival hinges on your faction choices during key story moments. When you reach the Battle of the Forbidden Gate, you must side with the anti-Shogun faction to prevent his death. Choosing the Shogun faction, while creating stronger friendship bonds, results in his demise due to conflicting loyalties.

Your decisions during the Kyoto chapter also affect his fate. Supporting the anti-Shogunate faction when you reach Kyoto maintains his survival chances, while opposing choices can eliminate access to his missions.

Successfully completing all of Takasugi's Bond missions while keeping him alive throughout the story rewards you with a trophy in Rise of the Rōnin. This achievement shows that you can handle the complicated political scene while keeping good relationships with allies.
