Here’s a guide on how to build your character

Building a strong character in Shape of Dreams starts with knowing the basics and learning how to put them into practice for each traveler you play.

In this guide, I’ll break down the key ideas behind making great builds and share practical examples for every character, so you can get the most out of your runs and have more fun along the way.

Build Crafting 101: The Basics

There are a few simple rules that can help you out every time you play. Your whole build is made up of two main things: Memories and Essences. Memories are your four main abilities, and Essences are special gems you add to those abilities to change how they work.

It’s kind of like having a weapon (the Memory) and then customizing it with cool upgrades (the Essences) to really make it shine.

Why Survival Is King

In Shape of Dreams, staying alive is just as important as dealing damage. Some of the best builds put a big focus on creating shields, since these always work—even when late-game challenges make regular healing less helpful. So the first thing to figure out with any build is how you’ll keep yourself safe and avoid getting knocked out.

Meta Progression: Where to Spend Your Stardust

When spending your Stardust for permanent upgrades in the Constellation menu, start by putting your early points into the Life tree. This will boost your survivability and help you last longer in each run, which means you’ll earn more Stardust in the long run, too.

Once you feel sturdy, you can start putting points into the Destruction tree for more damage. Save the Imagination tree for later, once you’re comfortable with the basics and want to optimize resource gains.

Vesper Builds

Vesper gets stronger as her max health goes up. For the “Mad Man” build, try using the Hysteria Memory with essences like Glacial Core, Essence of Frost, and Predation. Activate Hysteria and go on the attack—Glacial Core will turn all that healing into extra damage for you.

If you want to make Vesper super tough, go for the “Unkillable Tank” build: use Chomp or Ice Shield along with the Paranoia essence. With this setup, Vesper will attack and heal herself automatically whenever she takes a hit.

Mist Builds

Mist has a fun build that lets you play almost on autopilot. Use the Fleche Memory with the Paranoia essence, and add any lifesteal or on-hit essences you find. Whenever Mist takes a hit, Paranoia will make her automatically use Fleche against an enemy, dealing damage and healing at the same time. It’s a great way to keep fighting and stay healthy without too much effort.

Shape of Dreams, How To Build Your Character

Yubar Builds

Yubar can be built for some seriously strong defense. For the “Infinite Shield” build, use the Frostbite Memory with cooldown reduction essences like Momentum—just keep using Frostbite to stay shielded all the time.

If you want something more advanced, try the “Exodia” build: equip Umbral Edge with Divine Faith, Clemency, and Guidance, and Arrow Barrage with Glacial Core and Frost. This combo gives you huge healing, shields, and damage all at once.

Shell Builds

Shell is best for players who like a bit of a challenge. Her playstyle is all about quick hit-and-run moves, using dashes and skills in between regular attacks—a technique called animation canceling.

If you want to master Shell, try using the Swift Strike Memory with essences like Essence of Wind and Predation for fast, high-impact attacks.

The Universal "Walking Simulator" Build

There’s also a “Walking Simulator” build that works for any character. Just find three specific essences and put them all on the same ability: a Firebolt essence (like Spiral) to shoot out projectiles automatically, a lifesteal essence (like Voracity) to heal you based on your damage, and an overhealing essence (like Guidance) to turn extra healing into shields. With all three on one skill, you’ll be able to attack, heal, and shield yourself just by moving around!
