GTA 6 PS5 Pro Performance Could Go Beyond 30fps With PSSR Upgrades

PS5 Pro enhancements may prioritize image quality and stability over significantly higher frame rate targets in GTA 6.

Ever since Rockstar officially revealed more details about GTA 6, discussions have centered on one major question: how the game will perform across current-generation hardware. Most expectations point toward a 30fps experience on standard consoles, while future hardware and PC are expected to offer higher performance.

However, there's still plenty of room for speculation, especially around the PS5 Pro and whether Rockstar used the extra development time to explore other GTA 6 performance options.

GTA 6: Will PS5 Pro Have a 40fps VRR Mode?

Many players have already come to terms with the fact that GTA 6 will likely target 30 fps on current-gen consoles, with better performance reserved for next-gen and PC. However, there is an interesting idea to examine. Would Rockstar offer a 40fps VRR setting on the PS5 Pro?

That additional year of development naturally raises that question. Rockstar is about to release one of the largest games ever, and most of the audience will be on PlayStation 5 platforms. It wouldn't be shocking to see some coordination between Rockstar and Sony to ensure the PlayStation versions are as good as possible.

A 40fps VRR option would most likely be a beefed-up version of the existing 30fps mode, unlocking the frame rate but perhaps sacrificing a few visual settings or the rendering resolution. That would be an attractive choice for sure. If Sony also secures the marketing partnership for GTA 6, offering an exclusive enhancement like this could help distinguish the PS5 Pro version from the competition.

40fps or Even 60fps Remains a Mystery

Whether Rockstar ultimately targets 40 fps or attempts a 60 fps mode remains unpredictable. Unlike a typical Unreal Engine title, GTA 6 is running on Rockstar's own technology, making educated guesses significantly harder. While GTA 5 shares some technological foundations, it is still fundamentally a 2013 game despite years of improvements and added rendering technology. GTA 6 represents an entirely new generation of Rockstar's engine.

Similarly, it's just as tricky to draw generalizations from Red Dead Redemption 2, as its open-world format is vastly different from that of GTA 6. The simulation systems, density, and general design are not directly comparable. As a result, nobody really knows what Rockstar has in store. The studio could even surprise everyone with a 60fps mode, though there is currently no evidence to support that possibility.

Why 40fps Could Still Be Difficult

From a visual standpoint, a 40fps mode does not seem unreasonable. However, graphics are only one part of the equation. The real challenge could come from CPU limitations. If GTA 6 is heavily constrained by simulation systems, increasing performance from 30 fps to a stable 40 fps requires substantially more CPU headroom than current consoles can provide.

Even so, if Rockstar launches GTA 6 with a locked and stable 30 fps, it would already represent the smoothest console launch in the franchise's history.

Previous GTA releases rarely delivered consistent frame rates at launch. GTA 5 originally launched on PlayStation 3, where maintaining a stable 30fps was difficult. The erratic performance was likewise a problem in GTA 4 and the GTA titles for the PS2. 30 fps would already be a significant improvement over past releases.

Simulation Could Be the Biggest Limitation

Simulation seems to be the main issue, while the hardware specifications of current-generation consoles are still somewhat similar. The PS5 Pro offers only about a 10% increase in CPU clock speed over the standard PlayStation 5 in one operating mode. That improvement falls well short of the roughly 33% increase required to move from a stable 30 fps to a stable 40 fps if CPU simulation is the primary bottleneck.

The game will also need to scale efficiently to less powerful hardware because it must run at 30 fps on the Xbox Series S. If the PS5 Pro can genuinely achieve 40 fps, there may not be a compelling reason why the standard PS5 or Xbox Series X could not also reach 40 fps with reduced visual settings.

PSSR Could Be the Real Upgrade

The more interesting question may not be whether Rockstar can squeeze out 40fps, but rather how the studio chooses to reconstruct the image. Rockstar could potentially adopt the PSSR 2.0. Alternatively, the game could rely on temporal anti-aliasing alongside FSR 1, which many suspect may already be part of the current console implementation based on existing footage.

If Rockstar adopts the newer PSSR technology and its image-quality approaches, matching FSR 4 while maintaining good performance on the hardware, the improvement could be substantial. Even if the framerate remains at 30fps, that alone might lead to a significantly superior visual experience on the PS5 Pro compared to the standard platform.

60fps Frame Generation Mode Seems Unlikely

Another option would be to use frame generation to double the 30 fps to 60 fps, similar to what some recent games have tried. But that doesn't sound like something that Rockstar would do. A 60fps experience built from a 30fps simulation probably feels uneven and sacrifices responsiveness.

Rockstar has always been about games that are built for visual fidelity and technical ambition, not sheer frame rates. Given the studio's reputation and history of producing technically stunning products, players will likely tolerate a 30fps-only experience, provided the entire presentation meets the incredibly high expectations for GTA 6.

In the end, the largest PS5 Pro upgrade might not be faster frame rates at all. Better image reconstruction, clearer visuals, and overall better presentation could be much more beneficial than pushing the game past 30fps.
