Inside the Steam Machine: Build Quality, Frame Rates, and Long-Term Impressions

When the Steam Machine first came out, people had different opinions about it. Some said it was too expensive, and others who got it said they weren't happy with it. A fuller picture can be made by looking more closely at the device's design and how it works.

We like the portability and compactness of the design. The small size allows us to move it easily from room to room. It sits in the basement, but can be taken upstairs to the living room without difficulty. The unit itself isn't significantly larger than a Steam Controller, and can be taken anywhere we want to play it.

Design and Portability of Steam Machine

The construction is also straightforward and versatile. When you remove the outer panel, you will see a heat sink at the bottom, and the face plate is secured with magnets, so you can easily exchange it with another one once you want to change its look. It is easily stained by fingerprints, and the stains reappear rapidly even after cleaning it for the test.

The rear features a DisplayPort, an HDMI port, a power connector, an Ethernet port, two USB ports, a USB-C port, and the fan assembly. The layout is kept to a minimum, and we value the moderation. The Steam Controller connects directly to the machine, and playing with it on this machine is not the same as on a normal PC setup; it's a better experience.

Another plus point is that the power adapter is included. Steam Machine also features a thin cable that plugs directly into the machine rather than a power brick, as most desktop towers do, making it easier to carry around, as noted above.

Steam Machine's Gameplay Performance

Steam Machine will also run at 1080p. Most games are 1080p 60 fps with no generation or upscale, and on a big-screen TV, 1080p 60 fps is good enough. Whereas, on other setups, the difference isn't always apparent at 1080p or 1440p, so it's not as much of a deal as it may sound.

Halo Campaign Evolved locked in at 60 fps while testing at 1080p. Additionally, 007 First Light has also managed 60 fps at 1080p. The titles can be played at 1440p resolution with 60 fps, but 4K drops to approximately 40 fps. This device will support 4K in high-action titles, though at 60 frames per second it will require frame generation.

When they went in, they didn't expect much on the 4K side, and the 1080p side was good to go. As for the price, that is a concern since the device maxes out at 1080p for $1,000. However, the Steam Machine isn't a console, so all Steam library content carries over without needing to worry about console generation changes.

Testing shows that most titles maintain a steady 60 fps at 1080p, while 4K gameplay requires frame generation.

Most reviews recommend not purchasing the Steam Machine on the first day, and that comment almost swayed us from keeping our order. That changed over time, however, because there wasn't much else on the market set up the same way at the same price. This is not impossible, as it can be built from individual parts, although similar builds are often larger and louder than this one put together by Valve.

If you are considering a purchase, the decision is yours and depends on how you plan to use the firearm. Steam Machine does a good job of playing a PC library on a TV. Much like the Steam Deck itself, the device is being criticized early in its release cycle, even though it is one of Valve's more successful products.

There's a history of such improvements in the Valve brand, though, and the Steam Machine certainly has the potential to become better with updates. Playtime has steadily risen since owning the Steam Machine, with more hours than I anticipated. The cost is a fair attack, and there is nothing else currently in the market in the same position. If you're not sure, buy it, as the experience to date has been satisfactory.
