Klei's Griftlands Rebooted As a Deck-building Rogue-lite

The Griftlands Alpha starts next month on the Epic Games Store.

Announced all the way back in 2017, Griftlands was supposed to be Klei Entertainment's first foray into the RPG genre. However, after a period of silence, the developer announced during the PC Gaming Show at E3 2019 that the title has since morphed into a deck-building rogue-lite.

The initial design was built around "a world where you had the freedom to do what you wanted, and the world would respond systemically to it". This included being able to backstab your party members "when they least expected it", however as development went on, Griftlands as a whole was "never better than the pieces", the developer explains.

The latest incarnation of Griftlands takes place in the same world, although in the form of a deck-building rogue-lite that gives players two decks: one for combat, another for negotiation. The choices you make, from which cards or jobs you take to which side you choose in a conflict are all said to matter.

While the full version of Griftlands will let players choose between three characters, the Alpha, which kicks off next month on the Epic Games Store for $14.99, will see them playing as Sal, "a freelance adventurer out for profit and revenge". The game will make its way to Steam, in Early Access, in June 2020. The full version is expected to launch in Fall 2020.

Interestingly enough, purchasing Griftlands on the Epic Games Store will get you its Steam version for free, as well as vice versa. You can read more in the developer's Steam post.
