On September 16th, Blizzard unveiled Kiriko, the 35th Overwatch hero. Available through Overwatch 2's Battle Pass, Kiriko is a support hero with an emphasis on mobility. Since her announcement, Blizzard has released a new character trailer for Kiriko exploring her origins and a blog post about her development history. The original Overwatch skyrocketed in popularity not just because of its fantastic team-based, hero shooter gameplay but also because fans fell in love with the characters and were interested in the lore of the Overwatch world.

Kiriko is the latest woman to protect the city of Kanezaka, and her mother trained fellow Overwatch heroes Genji and Hanzo. She is torn between her grandmother's traditions and her mother's progressive attitude. Her grandmother devoted herself to a fox spirit and, as a result, was gifted healing knowledge, meanwhile, her mother understood that her position as a guardian was changing and that she would need to change with it. Both women taught Kiriko important skills, and her arsenal reflects such with Kiriko utilizing Healing Ofuda talismans as well as Kunai Blades. Kiriko is "a powerful protector with a strong moral compass", but that is not to say she is an overly serious character. "Cunning, agile, and a bit of a trickster", Kiriko will tease her friends and taunt her enemies.

While Kiriko was initially created as an enemy type in Overwatch 2's PvE game mode, "her concept art inspired the direction of both her gameplay and narrative". A natural leader, her ultimate ability Kitsune Rush "encourages teammates to move forward". The Kitsune Rush is led by her faithful fox spirit, a creature she works alongside "similarly to how Genji and Hanzo work alongside their dragons", and is another little glimpse at Overwatch's less explored mystical side.

Kiriko and her fox are available when Overwatch 2 launches on October 4th on Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
