At Anime Expo 2025, CD Projekt Red made it clear that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners would be back for a second season. Studio Trigger, the famous animation studio that made the first series, will make this highly anticipated follow-up as well. It looks like the Cyberpunk 2077 world will continue to be visually stunning. There will be 10 shows in the new season, and the story will pick up right where the first season left off.
One major shift, however, lies in the creative leadership. While Studio Trigger remains at the helm, directorial duties will now fall to Kai Ikarashi, best known for directing Episode 6 of the original Edgerunners—widely considered the most emotionally impactful episode outside of the finale. Alongside Ikarashi, the original writer and showrunner will return, preserving the core creative DNA that made Edgerunners a critical and commercial success.

When many talented players return, it's only natural that standards are high. Based on Studio Trigger's animation schedules and the fact that there isn't a set release date yet, this new season is probably still in the early stages of production. A start in late 2026 or even early 2027 seems most likely, which is in line with how Trigger-led projects have usually been developed.
There are also bigger effects for Cyberpunk 2077 that come from this statement. The first season of Edgerunners changed the way people thought about the game in a big way. When Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners came out in September 2022, it saw a huge increase in player activity, with active Steam numbers going up by ten times. The anime's positive reviews and emotional stories were big parts of getting people interested in the game again and improving CD Projekt Red's image after the launch.
Because Season 1 had a measured effect, it makes sense to think that Season 2 of Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077 will have a bigger impact together. While the first season was accompanied by a minor in-game DLC—including David's jacket, new locations, and a themed braindance—it now appears that CD Projekt Red is preparing a more substantial tie-in. According to a recent LinkedIn update by a writer at Virtuos Games, side quest content related to Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in development, suggesting additional DLC may arrive to coincide with the new anime release.
Further speculation is supported by comments from the Polish voice actress for Judy Alvarez, who recently teased involvement with new content. While no official announcements have confirmed the nature of this update, CD Projekt Red's pattern of expanding older titles—as seen with ongoing content development for The Witcher 3, nearly a decade after its launch—offers precedent for renewed attention to Cyberpunk 2077 five years after its release.
It's worth noting that CD Projekt Red continues to distinguish between downloadable content (DLC) and full expansions. Paid expansions like Phantom Liberty add a lot of new content, but smaller DLC updates usually come out for free and add cosmetic items, tasks, and make the game more enjoyable to play. A themed DLC accompanying Edgerunners Season 2—especially given its potential narrative impact—would be a strategic opportunity to re-engage the player base at scale.

Adding another layer of intrigue, CD Projekt Red is also collaborating with Anonymous Content on a live-action Cyberpunk project, though little has been shared publicly since its announcement. It's unclear how this project fits into the world of Edgerunners or the broader game universe, but it's clear that the Cyberpunk IP isn't going away.
Edgerunners 2 is coming out soon, and there are hints of new DLC or story material in Cyberpunk 2077. This means that the game will likely stay popular long after its original release date. CD Projekt Red appears dedicated to keeping the world of Night City alive, whether through new character arcs, post-release updates, or multimedia stories. Not only for fans of the series, but also for the history of one of the most talked-about games of the decade, the upcoming anime could be another turning point.
